HENRY PANGBORN, OF SAGINAIV, MICHIGAN.
SNOW- PLOW.
SPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365,197, dated June 21,1887.
Serial No. 224,639. (No model.)
To (tZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY PANGBORN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snow -Plows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of my improved snow-plow, Showing a portion of the wing of the forward or main plow broken away; Fig. 2, a side elevation thereof, partly in section, taken on line was of Fig. 3; and Fig. 3 an under side plan view of the plow.
The present invention has relation to that class of plows mounted upon runners and provided at the rear thereof with hinged wings and means for raising or lowering the plow; and the object of the invention is to improve the construction of this class of plows, whereby greater effectiveness is secured in clearing a road, and in which the several operating parts of the plow are materially simplified, which object I attain by the construction substantially as shown in the drawings, and herein after described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the frame of the machine of any desirable construction, provided with a central beam, (1,
upon which is supported the drivers seat I).
This frame is supported upon suitable runners, B C, the former being connected to the rear of the frame A and the latter to the forward end of the beam a. These runners may be connected in any well-known manner; but it is preferred that the runners B be loosely connected to their bearings, so that they will have a rocking motion and adapt themselves to the unevenness of the surface over which they pass, and the runners 0 connected to the beam a in the usual manner, so that they will turn either to the right or left.
I do not wish to be understood as confining myself to any special form or construction of frame or runners or the manner of connecting them to the frame and beam, and therefore any change or modification may be made as comes within ordinary mechanical skill without departing from the principle of my invention. To the sides of the frame A are conward ends thereof, said wings upon their inner side having loosely connected thereto segmeir tal'slotted guides E, through the slots ofwhieh pass pins 0, the guides passing through slots in the side beams of the frame, as shown more clearly in Fig. 1. These guides hold the wings D steady in their swinging movement, and also serve as braces when unequal pressure is brought on any portion of the wings.
The forward ends of the wings D have what I term supplemental plows, F, for the purpose of cleaning out the ice,and when turning corners to lower one side of the road, if de sired, this being considered important as an adjunct to the hinged wings.
In order to provide means by which the entire plow can be raised or lowered bodily by a single device, I employ an adjusting handscrew, G, and connect the plow H to the front ends of parallel beams d c, which beams form a frame for the plow, and are connected together back of the plow bysuitable transverse braces, i. This frame, which may be of any other preferred construction, is suitably pivoted at its rear end to the frame A by means of the rodf.
The lower end of the adjusting-screw G is suitably connected to the forward end of the beam 0, so that-by turning the screw in the proper direction the plow II and the frame to which it is connected is raised or lowered, as the case may bc,to adapt the plow to different depths of snow. The supplemental plows F are also adjustable by means of similar handserews, I, and in the same manner as the adjustment of the plow II, the supplemental plows being attached to upright beams 0, working between guides h on the frame A, the beams being raised or lowered by means of the handserews hereinbefore referred to.
Any well-known means maybe employed for rendering the supplemental plows vertically adjustable, as the plows in themselves are a special feature of my invention, and are considered of material value in connection with the hinged wings and the plow II.
The pivoted frame to which the plow H is nected suitable hinged wings, I), at the for k v ered, as the case may be.
attached, although consisting, preferably, of
the central beam, 6, and the two side beams,d,
lower ends thereof being swiveled or loosely connected to the upright beams g, which beams have connected to their lower ends the supplemental plows F, and by turning the screws the upright beams will be raised or lowered, and with them the plows.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a snow-plow, the combination, with 25 hinged wings and adjustable supplemental plows, of the main or forward plow connected to an adjustable frame, substantially as and for the purpose set fort 2. In a snow-plow, suitably-hinged wings and the plow arranged at the forward end of 0 the machine, in combination with vertically adjustable supplemental plows arranged between the wings and main plow, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. In a snow-plow, a main frame provided with suitable runners, and having hinged wings and vertically-adjustable supplemental plows, in combination with the main plow connected to aframe, said frame being pivoted to the main frame of the machine, and means I for vertically adjusting the plow and frame, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in thepresence of two witnesses.
HENRY PANGBORN.
