T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Eo'ron L. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sidney, in the county of Comanche and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ditching Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a machine adapted for use in road and terrace building and for ditching purposes.
A further object is to provide a type of drag, and certain novel controlling means therefor.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of elements described and claimed, it being understood that modifications may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the machine; Figure 2 is a perspective view, from another angle; Figure 3 is a detail View showing a modified form of connection between the blade and landside; Figure 4 is a perspective view showing the means for varying the elevation of wheel 38 with reference to the frame; Figure 5 is a detail showing means for adjusting the position of the seat spring when the machine is tilted laterally; Figure 6 shows the manner of connecting one of the transverse elements with the blade. The element 10 represents a blade which may be about seven feet long, this element being slightly curved outwardly at its upper edge and being bevelled on the inner side of its lower edge.
The land-side of the machine is designated 14 and the elements 10 and 14 converge at their forward ends, a shoe 15 being located as illustrated. Bracket 16 supports a seat spring and seat 16, a slot 16 being provided to permit of adjustment according to the position assumed by the machine in use.
Two pairs of adjustable braces are employed, the elements of one pair being designated 17 and 18, and those of the other pair being designated 19 and 20. A series of holes in one or both elements of pairs permit of varying the width of the device as a whole. Pivotal movement is provided at 21.

The. height of the machine is controlled by lever 30, the pawl 31 operating in the V usual manner by means of elements 32 and 33. A segment 34 with which the pawl co operates is mounted at 35. A fork 36 is connected with the segment at 37, and the wheel 38 is mounted between the elements of the fork. Braces are shown at 39 and 40, by means of the construction just described, the wheel 38 may be moved with reference to elements 10 and 14, for changing the elevation. The element 10 will be of steel, and the element 14, about twelve feet in length, being of oak with a strip of steel 12 extending along the lower edge thereof.
A supportingrod 41 telescopes with reference to tube 42 and is retained by set screw 43, and a ball and socket joint 44 provides a universal movement.
An extension 47 is mounted with bolts 48 and 49, the bolt last named passing through segmental slot 50, and permits of raising of the rear end of the extension, when desired.
The steel plate 10 may be about 18 inches high, and the landside about 12 inches high. The curved arm 26 at the forward end has a series of'apertures, and a bolt 26 passes through beam 22 and through any of the apertures, permitting the angular position of the shoe to be varied.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
1. In a device of the class described, a blade, a land-side member connected with said blade, the blade and landside member converging with reference to each other, and adjustable braces extending transverse- 1y between the blade and land-side member, beams adjustably connected with the blade and landside respectively, said beams extending upwardly and then forwardly over the upper edges of the blade and landside, and means for connecting the forward ends of the beams. V
2. In a device of the class described, a blade, a land-side member extending at an angle thereto, an element extending transversely between the blade and land-side 'member, a segment mounted on said transverse member, a forked bracket mounted on the segment, a wheel mounted in thefork, and a lever and pawl, said lever being connected with the fork, for changing the relative elevation of the wheel and the blade, beams adjustably connected with the blade and landside respectively and connected with each other, and an upwardly extending arm connected with the landside and with one of the beams.
3. In a device of the class described, a blade, at land-side member extending at an angle thereto, an element extending transversely between the blade and land-side member, a segment mounted on said trans verse member, a forked bracket mounted on the segment, a wheel mounted in the fork, and alever and pawl, said lever being connected with the fork, for changing the relative elevation of the wheel and the blade,
and a device comprising a plurality of relatively adjustable members extending between the forked bracket and the land-side member, and a universal joint for effecting connection between said device and the land-side member.
4. In a device of the class described, a blade, a landside member extending at an angle thereto, a ground wheel and vertically and laterally adjustable mounting means therefor, comprising a lever and fork connected therewith, the wheel being journaled in the fork, a two-part adjustable transverse device connecting the blade and landside member, means thereon for pivotally mounting the lever, and an adjustable trans- 1 verse device connectingthe fork with the landslde member.
