To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PASQUAL'E URSINO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ellensburg, in the county of Kittitas and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ballast- Surfacers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to apparatus for grading and surfacing ballast at the sides of railway tracks; and its object is to provide apparatus of this character which will be convenient to operate and eflicient and rapid in use.
With these ends in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, adaptation andcombination of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a railway car showing an embodiment of my invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of the same. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary rear eleven tion of the scraper and surfacing member. Figs. 4. and 5 are detail sectional views through 4--4 and 5-5 of Fig. 2.
In said drawings the reference numeral 10 designates the body or platform of a car having wheels 11 tracking upon rails 12 which are mounted upon ties, such as 13.
Rigidly secured upon the car platform is a transversely arranged beam 14 and a second transversely arranged beam 15 is secured to the underside of said platform.
Secured adjacent to each end preferably of the beam 14 is an attachment 16 provided with a tubular element 17 Fig. 4, which extends horizontally through the beam.
Botatable within the element 17 is a hollow boss element 18 of the casting 18 hav ing an arm 19 provided with laterally directed spaced lugs 20. Said lugs serve as bracket supports for lugs 21 of a frame, indicated generally by 22, and are connected by a hinge bolt 23 to afford swinging movements to the frame at substantially right angles to the axis of rotation of the casting boss 18 Said frame, as shown, is formed of a plate or web element 24 reinforced at its top and outer edges by an angle bar 25. The lower edge 24 of the web is curved to correspond tothe curvature of the sectional Specification of Letters Patent.

Secured to the rear side of the frame web 24 is a curved blade 27, hereinafter designated as the surface blade, whose lower edge 27 protrudes below the web edge 24 and is parallel thereto. At the front side of the frame web is a curved blade 28, hereinafter designated as the grading blade, with its lower edge serrated by the provision of teeth 29 formed to have their points in an arc or curve parallel to the lower edges 24 and 27 respectively, of the web and surfacer 27 but protruding below both of them to afford a groove A, Fig. 5, in the lower edge of the frame 22. 30 represents bolts whereby said grading and surfacing blades are detachably secured to the frame web 24.
Provided in a recess at the lower inner corner of the frame is a plurality of sections 31 which are hingedly connected at their upper ends by a pin 32 to the frame and adapted to individually swing roarwardly in opposition to springs 33. Said sections, moreover, are formed at the lower ends with spaced surfacing and grading teeth which are disposed to be in the respective curves of the blade edge 27 and the series of teeth 29 of the associated frame.
The function of said hinged sections is to enable the grading and surfacing of the ballast to be effected close to the ends of the ties of uniform lengths and also when an abnormally long tie is encountered by one or more of the sections the latter will be yieldingly swung back for the purpose of freely passing over the same.
35 represents a gutter mold blade in the form of a wing extension unprovided with teeth and is detachably connected to the outer end of a frame by bolts 36. A coupling bolt 87 passing axially through a block 38 inserted in one end of the tubular element 17 of the beam attachment 16 and the casting 18 serves to couple the two last named parts in swiveled relation. An apertured projection 39 provided on the casting 18 affords a socket for a handle bar 40 whereby the casting 18 may be tilted to elevate the frame 22 and attached parts into an elevated position such, for example as indicated by dotted lines 22 in Fig. 2. A spring actuated dog 41, Fig. 4, acts to engage in one or the other of notches 41 pro vided in the casting 18 for retaining the frame 22 in its referred to dotted line position or in its lower operating position.
Connected by eye-bolts 42 to the frame 22 are two forwardly extending links 43 which are pivotally connected at their forward ends by a bolt 44: to a link as whose forward end, in turn, is connected to a bolt L6 secured in a bifurcated fixture d7 at the end of the beam .15. The aforesaid links constitute a foldable brace which serves when extended to retain the frame 22 at an oblique angle with respect to the car as shown at the right hand side of Fig. 1; but when the brace is in its folded condition, as illustrated at the left sides of Figs. 1 and 2, a frame is brought into juxtaposition with the adjacent side of the car. In operation the frame occupies the position relative to the car in which it is represented by full lines in Figs. 1 and 2. When passing a crossing the frame is raised as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2 and when it is not employed or in passing obstructions, at the sides of the track, such as posts or fences, the frame is swung into proximity of the car. v
When traveling forward or in the direction of the arrow (Fig. 1) the serrated grading blade 28 at the forward side of a.
frame scrapes or removes material from the ballast down to approximately the contour line causing such surplus material to be directed to the outside of the frame.
The teeth 29 of the grading blade furthermore scores into the remaining portion of the ballast below the frame and acts as a rake to remove surface rocks or lumps from the ballast which is caused by the blade to ,be discharged downwardly on the ballast and beyond the outer end of the part lVith the roe s etc., thus removed the loose surface material passes between the teeth 29 into the groove A to engage against the front face of the surfacing blade 27, and spreads out along the latter to fill any holes due'to the removal of the rocks.
Any surplus material which cannot pass under the surfacing blade escapes through the slot transversely to the car and such as is traveled over by the surfacingblade is rendered thereby smooth and of a uniform top surface. r
The advantages of the present invention reside principally in the automatic action of the grading and surfacing devices which affords a finely pulverized surface.
VVhatI claim is l. .ln apparatus of the character described, the combination with a railway car, and a transversely arranged beam rigidly secured to the platform of said car, of frames connected to the ends of said beam for vertical and horizontal movement, ballast grading and surfacing plates secured to the front and rear sides respectively of each of said frames, and foldable braces connecting said frames with the ad jacent sides of the car in front of the respective frames and adapted to cause the respective frames to be drawn in oblique relations to the car by the respective plates engaging the ground in the forward travel of the car and also allow' the frames to be swung into substantially parallel relations thereto.
In apparatus of the character described, a. car, a frame extending obliquely from one side thereof, said frame having a web element, a serrated ballast grading blade, a ballast surfacing blade, means to detachahly secure said. blades res uictively to the front and bark sides of the frame web and projecting below the latter to afford a channel below said web element and between the blades.

In apparatus of the character described, a car, a frame connected to the side thereof for horizontal movements, means to releasably secure said frame to ex tend laterally from the car, and spaced grading and surfacing blades se ured to the front and rear sides respectively of said frame so as to afford a channel below the latter.
4t. In apparatus of the character described, a ca a frame extending laterally therefrom, a serrated blade secured to the lower portion of said frame, and a plurality of spring-pressed sections depemling fromv the frame and arrai'iged to be swung rearwardly with respect to the travel of the car.
5. In. apparatus of the character described, a car, a frame hingedly connected thereto for vertical swinging movements, grading and surfacing plates serured to said frames, a lever, means for operativelv connecting said lever to the frame for ele vatingthe latter from its operative position, and adog engageable with said means for releasably securing the frame in its operative and elevated position.
