ROAD-DRAG.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 27, 1917.
Application filed January 12, 1916. Serial No. 71,647.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD- B. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road- Drags, of which the following is a specification. 1
This invention relates to the type of drags that are designed to be used on highways or streets for scraping and leveling the surfaces thereof, and the principal feature of the invention resides in the provision of blades capable of being adjusted longitudinally, so that the rear blade will track with the front blade irrespective of the oblique position which the drag occupies relative to the road or the line of advancement.
Heretofore, in devices of this character, it has been the practice to arrange the blades in fixed relation to the frame, hence when the drag is adjusted obliquely to the road and drawn along beside a ditch, the adjacent end of the front blade is spaced some distance from said ditch and only the rear blade extends thereto. The result is that an objectionable ridge is left in the road between the ditch-ends of the blades, which requires additional labor for its removal.
I overcome the foregoing objection by arranging the blades in such manner that they can be adjusted longitudinally and independently of each other and secured at any point of their adjustment to the frame, thus the rear blade can be arranged to track with the front blade, instead of extending to one side thereof, irrespective of the angular position which the drag may occupy to the line of travel.
In order that the invention may be fully understood, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a road drag constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a broken vertical section, enlarged, and showing one of the blades detached from the frame preparatory to adjusting said blades longitudinally.
Fig. 3 is a cross section, enlarged, on line TIL-III of Fig. 1 with parts in a somewhat different position.
Fig. 1 is a broken section, enlarged on line IVIV of Fig. 1.
F ig. 5 is a longitudinal section on line V-V of Fig. 1.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a frame consisting of parallel longitudinal bars 1, arms 2 permanently secured to said bars 1 near the ends thereof, and transverse bars 3 connected to the upper end of the arms 2 by pivots 41. The arms 2 are secured to the bars 1, by suitable means such as bolts (i designates angle-bars adjustably secured to the bars 1, by suitable means such as bolts 5, and permanently secured to the rear sides of scraper blades 7 by bolts or other suitable devices 8. The angle-bars 6 are longer than the parallel bars 1 and provided with spaced holes 9, adapted to register with the bolt holes in the parallel bars 1.
In addition to being adjustable longitudinally, the blades 7 may be tipped backward and forward independently of each other through the intermediacy of a pair of arms 10 bolted to each parallel bar 1, hand levers 11, and connecting bars 12 pivotally connecting said hand levers 11 to the arms 10. The hand levers 11 have latches 13 for engagement with notched sectors 14, secured by bolts 15 to a transverse bar 16, connected at its ends to the front and rear arms 10 by pivots l7 and provided with a fulcrum 18, upon which the hand levers 11 are mounted.
A platform 20 for the driver to stand upon is secured to the angle-bars 3 and rests upon crossed braces 21 uniting said angle-bars 3 and the transverse bar 16. A draft chain 21 attached at its ends to the forward ends of the angle-bars 3, is provided with a link 22, to which a doubletree (not shown) may be attached. The link 22 can be shifted into engagement with any link of the chain 21.
In practice, the link 22 is usually adjusted closer to one end of the draft chain 21 than the other for the purpose of adjusting the road drag obliquely to the line of travel, so that the blades 7 will move the loose dirt'to the center of the road to crown the same. If the angle of obliquity be considerable the rear blade is adjusted to the right, while the front blade is adjusted to the left as disclosed by Fig. 1, so that said blades Will track. Hence when operating adjacent the ditches usually extending along the sides of a road to carry off rain water, the front blade can be worked as close to said ditches as the rear blade.
While the drawings show the drag provided with only two blades, it is to be understood that additional blades may be em ployed as desired, and other changes may be made in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as properly fall within the spirit and scope of the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a road drag, a frame adapted to be adjusted obliquely to the road, and front and rear blades arranged to be adjusted longitudinally of said frame, so that the rear blade may follow in the track of the front blade.
2. In a road drag, a frame adapted to be adjusted obliquely to the road, blades capable of independent longitudinal adjustment to track upon the road, and means for securing said blades at any point of their adjustment to said frame.
3. In a road drag, a frame, blades capable of independent longitudinal adjustment, angle-iron bars fixed to said blades, and means for securing said angle-iron bars to the frame after the blades have been adjusted longitudinally.
l. In a road drag, a frame adapted to be adjusted obliquely to the road, blades 1 capable of independent longitudinal adjustment, bars fixed to said blades, and means for securing said bars to the frame after the blades have been adjusted longitudinally.
In testimony whereof I allix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
