W. B. J ONES. snow PLOW 0R SGRAPER.
No. 509,811. I Patented Nov. '28, 1893.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM B. JONES, OF LINCOLN, ILLINOIS.
SNOW PLOW OR SCRAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 509,811, dated November 28, 1893.
Application filed February] 8, 1893. Serial No. 462,910- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. J ONES, a citizen oft-he UnitedStates, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Logan, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snow Plows or Scrapers; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan View of my improved snow-plow or scraper, the closed position and one of the expanded positions being shown in dotted lines, while one intermediate expanded position is shown in full lines in this view. Fig. 2, is an inside face view of one of the wings of the snow-plow or scaper, and an outside face view of the other wing of the snow-plow or scraper, the parts being disconnected. Fig. 3 isa detached view of the adjusting bar for regulating the spread of the wings of the snow-plow or scraper. Fig. 4 is a detached View of the head or nose of the plow or scraper, the braces m, one of which is shown in Fig. 1, being omitted; and Fig. 5 is a detail view of the front portion ofone of the wings of the plow or scraper provided with the hinges by which the front ends of said wings are connected with the head or nose of the implement. it
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings A designates the head or nose which is made in the form of two sides of a triangle in horizontal section and is recessed at ff' in its upper end near its rear vertical edges, and is recessed also in its lower end, at f to correspond with said recesses f Upper and lower cross-pieces, or strips m are fitted in the recesses f f to brace and strengthen the head or nose A of the plow or scraper and give it greater stability in use. The Wings D,
D are of board and are preferably covered with sheet metal to prolong their usefulness, but the metal covering is not essential in most instances, as the device is a hand device, and is pushed along by hand, the inclined handle 0, p, n being connected to the rear ends of the wings. for this purpose.
The spreader K comprises two parallel boards 2' of about the same width as the wings D, D, said boards being connected at about the middle of their length with a crossbar j vertically disposed, and being provided at their ends and on the under faces of said boards 2' t' with rabbets k which fit upper and lower flanges extending along the length of the boards D D. The wings increase in width from their front to their rearends, so that the snow may be the more readily turned as the plow or scraper is pushed forward through the snow. Where sheet metal covering is used frames only are provided, which are braced by vertical braces 01 d, and the metal is secured in any suitable manner to the longitudinal and vertical braces. The wings, hinges e, and head or nose of the scraper or plow are connected by screws, so that the wings can be expanded and contracted at pleasure by moving the adjusting bar. For light work only a single adjusting bar 2' is used, but it is preferable to use the two connected bars 6, as they do not materially increase the weight or the cost of the structure.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with the tri-angular shaped head, notched and provided with the braces m, of the rearwardly extending wings hinged to said head, and the movable adj listing-bar consisting of the cross-barj and the bars '5, said wings being provided with handles for propelling the plow or scraper, substantially as specified.
