HAND SNOW-PL 0W.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 28, 1919.
Application led May 22, 1919. Serial No. 298,852.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS SHUN, a citizen of Poland, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in I-IandSnow-Plows, of which the following is a specication.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of means especially adapted for cleaning sidewalks of snow and ice easily and quickly during the forward travel of the operator.
A further object of the invention is to provide a snow plow adapted for manual operation for cutting through snow and ice upon the sidewalk and being compactly foldable for storing away when not in use.
With these general objects in view the invention consists of the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings and in which like reference characters are employed *throughout the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a central longitudinal sectional view through the invention,
Fig. 2 is a. top plan view thereof with the plow open ready for use,
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 with the plow closed.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged transverse sectional view of the invention taken upon line IV- IV of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 5 is an enlarged horizontal detail sectional view thereof.
My invention comprises a bottom or platform 10 elongated in form with a tapered forward portion 11 having a triangular nose or cutting block 12 upon the forward end thereof. A push member 24 extending at an oblique angle upwardly and rearwardly of the end of the platform 10 has a cross handle 13 upon the upper free end thereof by means of which the plow is operated.
A plate 14 secured to the inner face of the nose 12 has a winl'g 15 forming a plow member hinged thereto as at 16 at each opposite sides of the invention. The wings l5 are adapted to swing inwardly substantially in contact with the adjacent oblique sides 17 of the platform l0, when the device is folded and for swinging outwardly in substantial alinement with the outer faces 33 of the nose 12 when the wings are projected with the device positioned for use in plowing.
A rectangular body or actuator 18 slidably mounted in a longitudinal slot 19 centrally of the platform 10 with a plate 20 beneath the platform retaining the actuator in sliding relations therewith. Outwardly projecting arms 21 upon the actuator 18 have terminal eyes 22 through which elongated staples or loops 23 extend and where- 'by as will be evident, the movement of the actuator 18 moves the wings 15 inwardly or outwardly according to the direction of travel of the actuator. In operating rod 25 is pivoted as at 26 to the rear end of the actuator 18 and extends rearwardly through a longitudinal slot 27 in the push member 24. A cross bar 28 upon the free end of the rod 25 beneath the push member 24 serves as a handle for moving the rod 25 and shifting the actuator 18 the bar 28 also serves as a stop, preventing the upper end of the rod from passing through the slot 27.
Inclined notches 29 in the lower side of the rod 25 are adapted to selectively engage over a transverse pin 30 in the slot 27. With the plow closed as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the forward movement o-f the rod 25 forces the actuator 18 toward the nose 12 and by means of the arms 21 projects the wings 15 outwardly in their operative position in V-shaped formation for forcing laterally the snow and ice during the travel of the plow therethrough. The wheels 32 are journaled at opposite sides of the platform 10 upon which the plow is adapted to travel.
The forward edge 31 of the nose 12 is formed as pointed as' desired for cutting its way through the snow when the plow is pushed forwardly by means of the handle 13. A downward movement of the handle 13 tends to elevate the nose 12 permitting the plow to pass over obstructions which cannot be penetrated 'by the point 31. The plurality of notches 29 also permits the reduct-ion of the wings 15 at different adjustments for cutting different widths of paths as may be found desirable, the engagement of the notches 29 with the pin 30 preventing the rearward movement of the rod 25 and actuator 18 and holding the blades 15 adjusted for outwardly turning the snow.
While the form of the invention herein shown anddescribed is believed to be the preferred embodiment thereof, it will be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A snow plow comprising a tapered platform, ground wheels for the platform, a triangular block at the forward end of the platform having a cutting edge at the front of the plow adapted for engaging the work, a plate secured to the rear transverse face of the block, wings at opposite sides of the platform hinged to the opposite ends of said plate, loops upon the inner faces of said wings and an actuator slidable longitudinally of the yplatform operatively connected to said loops whereby the wings are adapted for inward and outward swinging movement during the shifting of the actuator.
Q'. A snow plow comprising a tapered platform, ground wheels for the platform, a triangular block at the forward end of the platform having a cutting edge at the front of the plow adapted for engaging the work, a plate secured to the rear transverse face of the block, wings at opposite sides of t'he platform hinged to the opposite ends of said plate, loops upon the inner faces of said wings, an actuator slidable longitudinally of the platform operatively connected to said loops whereby the wings are adapted for inward and outward swinging movement during the shifting of the actuator, a rearwardly extending push-member carried by the platform, an operating rod for the actuator freely extending through said push-member and adjustable connections between said push-member and rod adapted for maintaining the actuator in its adjusted position when the wings are arranged for use.
3. A snow plow comprising a tapered platform, ground wheels for the platform, a
triangular block at the forward end of the platform having a cutting edge at the front of the plow adapted for engaging the work, a plate secured to the rear transverse face of the block, wings at opposite sides of the platform hinged to the opposite ends of said plate, loops upon the inner faces of said wings, the platform being provided with a longitudinal slot, an actuator longitudinally slidable upon the platform projecting through said slot, a plate secured to the actuator beneath the platform, outwardly projecting arms upon the actuator through which said loops are slidably positioned and adjustable retaining means for the actuator.
4. A snow plow comprising a tapered platform, ground wheels for the platform, a triangular block at the forward end of the platform having a cutting edge at the front of the plow adapted for engaging the work, a plate secured to the rear transverse face of the block, wings at op-posite sides of the platform hinged to the opposite ends of said plate, loops upon the inner faces of said wings, the platform -loeing provided with a longitudinal slot, an actuator longitudinally slidable upon the platform proj eoting through said slot, a plate secured to the actuator beneath the platform, outwardly projecting arms upon the actuator through which said loops are slidably positioned, an upwardly and rearwardly projecting pushmember attached to the platform, a handle on the free end of said push-member, an operating rod pivoted to the actuator freely extending through said push-member, a stop bar upon the free end of said rod and ad justment-retaining connections between said rod and push-member.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature.
NICHOLAS SHUN.
