ROAD SCRAPER AND GRADER.
To all whom it' may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE K. SMITH and RALPH RUSSELL, of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, and JOHN ANDERSON, Jr., and HOWARD GRIMES, of Newcomb, in the county of Essex and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road Scrapers and Graders; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, Such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in road Scrapers and graders-one object of the invention being to provide simple and eiiicient means for adjusting the angle of a plurality of Scrapers to the line of travel; for adjusting said Scrapers vertically, and for adjusting the angle of the Scrapers relatively to the ground.
A further object is to so construct the machine that it can be run either on wheels or runners, and to provide simple and eiii cient means for throwing either the wheels or runners into operative position.
A further object is to provide means whereby one end of each scraper can be raised higher than the other end so as to shape thc surface of the road as desired.
lith these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a machine embodying .our improvements. Fig. 2 is a side elevation.. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view, and Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view.
1 represents a rectangular frame comprising side beams 2 connected near their respective ends by cross-beams 3 and the latter are connected by a central beam t. The side beams 2 are enlarged at their respective ends to form runners 5 and each runner is provided with a flange or strip 6 which projects slightly below the bottom face of the runner to form a cutting edge therefor. Brackets 7 are secured to each side-beam 2 and support longitudinally movable beams 8. The brackets 7 are so shaped as to permit vertical adjustment of the beams 8 and each Specification of Letters Patent.

In the drawings we have shown two such Scrapers disposed transversely under the frame and of a length appreciably The Scrapers 18 are loosely connected at points centrally between their ends, with the lower ends of guide members 14: which pass upwardly and loosely through slots 15 in the central beam 4 of the frame. Such universal pivotal connection of the central portions of the Scrapers with the frame will permit said Scrapers to be shifted so that their angle to the direction of travel of the machine can be adjusted and also vertical adjustment of lsaid Scrapers will be permitted. The said universal pivotal connection of the Scrapers with the central portion of the frame will allow the scrapers to be adjusted to change their angle relatively to the ground. It is apparent that by moving the respective beams 8 in reverse directions, the Scrapers will be caused to turn on the universal pivotal connections above described and the angle of the scrapers with relation to the direction of travel of the machine will be changed. For the purpose of effecting the angular' adjustment above mentioned, the devices now to be described will be employed: A platform 16 is located upon the forward portion of the frame and centrally between the ends of said platform is a bracket 17. A vertical shaft 18 is mounted in this bracket and provided at its upper end with a hand wheel 19 and at its lower end (within the bracket) with a pinion 20. Levers 21 are pivotally mounted upon the platform 16 at respective sides of the bracket thereon and these leversy are provided at their inner ends with toothed segments 21a which mesh with the pinion 20. The outer ends of the levers Q1 have links 22 pivotally connected tl1erewith,-Said links projecting rearwardly from the levers and being loosely connected at their rear ends with pins 23 on the longitudinally movable beams 8. It is apparent that by rotating the shaft 18, motion will be transmitted to the levers 2l and by the latter to the beams 8 so as to move the respective beams 8 in reverse direct-ions and thus alter the angularity of the scrapers relatively to the line of travel of the machine.
For the purpose of turning the Vscrapers on `their pivotal connections with the frame and with the beams S so as to adjust their angle relative to the surface of the road, the devices which will now be described will be employed: Pivotally connected between their ends with each beam S, are two levers 24, the lower end of each of which is made with a forwardly projecting slotted portion 25 through which a rod 26 secured at its ends to the back of the adjacent scraper passes. The upper ends of each pair of levers 24 are connected by a pitman 27 and the latter is pivoted to a hand lever 2S. Each hand lever 28 is pivotally connected at its lower end with the beam 8 and is provided with a detent 29 to engage a toothed segment 30 carried by the beam 8. IVith this construction and arrangement of parts, the operator can by manipulating the hand levers 28, move thescrapers 13 so as to raise or lower their cutting edges and thus change the angle of said scrapers relatively tothe road.
To the inner side of each runner 5 at respective ends of the side-beams 2 of the frame, brackets 3l are pivotally attached and carry wheels 32. Each bracket 3l is provided with an arm 33 and curved guides 34 are secured to the frame so as to cooperate with said arms and prevent lateral displacement of the brackets. To each side beam 2 or the rear runner thereon, a handlever 35 is pivotally connected between its ends. The rear ends of rods 36 are connected with the hand-levers 35 above the `pivot-al support of the latter and the lforward ends of said rods are connected with the arms 33 of the forward wheel brackets 31. The rear wheel brackets are connected by means of links 37 with the lower ends of the hand-levers 35. Each hand-lever 35 is provided with a detent 38 and toothed segments 39 are secured to the side-beams of the frame to be engaged by said detents. By manipulating the hand-levers 35 t-he wheels can be raised so as to permit the machine to run on the runners 5 or said wheels can be lowered to raise the runners from the ground and permit the machine to run on the wheels. In this manner the scrapers can be adjusted vertically relatively to the surface of the road and by so adjusting the wheels at one side of the machine that the latter will be raised higher than the other side, the scrapers can be disposed so as to shape the surface of the road as desired. A
platform 40 may be secured upon the rear portion of the central beam of the frame and support a seat 4l and a tool boX 42.
Slight changes might be made in the details of construction of our invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope and hence we do not wish to restrict ourselves to the precise constructive details herein set forth.
Having fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is,-
l. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a traveling frame, of longitudinally movable beams carried thereby, scrapers supported by said beams and having pivotal connectionl with the frame, and means for moving said beams longitudinally in reverse directions to adjust the angularity of said scrapers.
2. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a traveling frame, of longitudinally movable beams supported thereby, scrapers supported by said beams and having pivotal connection with the frame, a hand operated shaft mounted on the frame, a pinion secured to said shaft, levers pivotally connected between their ends with the frame, each lever provided at one end with a toothed segment to mesh with said pinion, and links connecting the outer ends of said levers with the respective longitudinally movable beams.
3. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a traveling frame, of longitudinally movable beams supported thereby, scrapers supported by said beams, means for moving said beams longitudinally to adjust the angularity of the scrapers to the direction of travel of the machine, and means for supporting said beams in different positions of vertical adjustment.
4. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a traveling frame and brackets secured to the side beams thereof, of longitudinally movable beams mounted in said brackets, means for sustaining the longitudinally movable beams in different vertical adjustments in said brackets, means for moving said beams longitudinally, and scrapers supported by said beams.
5. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a traveling frame, longitudinally movable beams supported thereby, and scrapers supported by said beams, of guide members mounted 1n the frame and having universal pivotal connection with the central portions of said scrapers, and means for moving said beams longitudinally in reverse directions respectively.
G. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a traveling frame provided with a central beam having` slots, ot longitudinally movable beams supported by the sides of said frame, scrapers supported by said longitudinally movable beams, guide members passing freely through the slots in the central beam of the frame, and universal pivotal connections between said guide members and the scrapers.
T. A machine of the character described, the combination with a traveling trame, of longitudinally movable beams, scrapers pivotally supported by said beams, means affording universal pivotal connection between the central portions of the scrapers and the central portion of the traveling frame, means for moving said beams longitudinally respectively in reverse directions to change the angularity of the scraper-s relatively to the line of travel of the machine, levers supported by the longitudinally movable beams and connected with the scrapers below their pivotal support and for adjusting said Scrapers relatively to the surface of the road, and hand operated means for manipulating said last mentioned levers.
S. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a traveling frame provided with runners and Scrapers supported by said fra-me, of brackets pivotally supported near respective ends of the iframe and at respective sides thereof, wheels mounted in said brackets, and hand operated devices connected respectively with the brackets at respective sides of the frame whereby the wheels can be lowered and the runners raised equal or different distances at respective sides of the machine to raise the Scrapers equal distances at both ends thereof or a. greater distance at one end than the other.-
