To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK A. MATTsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cumberland, in the county of Barron and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road- Graders, of which the following is a specifi cation.
The present invention appertains to machines for leveling roads and for grading and renewing the surfaces thereof.
The purpose of the invention is to devise a machine of the character and for the purpose aforesaid which is light in draft, free from side movement, effective in operation and easily controlled both as to vertical and lateral adjustment.
lVhile the invention may be adapted to different forms and conditions by changes in the structure and minor details without departing from the spirit or essential features thereof, still the preferred form of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of a road grader embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the machine. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3- 3 of Fig. 1, looking toward the rear. Fig. 4 is a front view. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the beam, the drag or scraper and the frame supporting the latter, the parts being in the position which they occupied in the working machine.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and illustrated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The main frame comprises rear longitudinal bars 1, a rear cross bar 2, front longitudinal bars 8, an arch 4 connecting the rear ends of the bars 3 and the front ends of the bars 1, a front cross bar 4 and a vertical frame 5, the latter being connected to the front cross bar 4. rlhe front and rear portions of the frame are in different horizontal planes and the connecting arch 4 is stepped as shown most clearly in Fig. 4 to accommodate the longitudinal bars 1 and 3.
The machine is mounted upon rear wheels G and a front truck 7. A rear axle 8 supporting the wheel 6 is mounted in the lower ends of the vertical members of the arch. The front truck 7 may be of any construction and is provided with a tongue 9 connected thereto in any approved way for guiding the machine. A vertical shaft 10 is connected at its lower end to the front truck 7 by means of a swivel joint or in any way to admit of the turning of the truck when guiding the machine in the accustomed manner. mounted in the frame 5 and is connected at its upper end to a link 11 which is pivoted at its rear end to a lever 12 at 13. The link 11 is rigidly connected at its front end to the shaft 10 and its upper side is channeled to receive the lever 12. A link 14 is pivoted at its lower end to a projection 15 extended forward from the frame 5 and the lever 12 is pivotally connected to the upper end of the link 14. The rear end of the lever 12 eX- tends Within convenient reach of the drivers seat 16, and is adapted to be held in an adjusted position by means of a toothed bar 1T and a hand latch 18. A chain 19 or analogous connection is interposed between the front end of the lever 12 and the front end of the beam 20. By proper manipulation of the lever 12 the front end of the machine may be raised or lowered. The beam 2O has its rear portion curved downwardly and forwardly and has pivotal connection at its lower end with the drag or scraper blade 21. A frame 22 is mounted upon the rear portion of the beam 20. A shaft 23 is mounted in the upper portion of the frame 22 and is supplied with a hand wheel 24 which is located within convenient reach of the drivers seat 16. A Second shaft 25 is likewise mounted in the frame 22, and its rear portion which is conveniently located to the drivers seat is provided with a hand-wheel 25. The front end of the shaft 25 is mounted in a frame 27 located near the front end of the beam 20 and which frame is approximately of U form. The front portion of the beam 20 is provided with a clevis section 28 for attachment to a draft animal. rThe clevis section 28 comprises transversely spaced members which pass between the vertical members of the frame 5 and embrace opposite sides of the vertical shaft 10, said clevis section being adapted to have both a vertical and a longitudinal play incident to the various adjust- The vertical shaft 10 `is ments of the beam 20. A'bail or crank shaftY 29 constitutes a brace to prevent lateral movement of the beam 20 while at the same time providing for vertical adjustment of the beam to admit of the drag or scraper blade 21 being moved up or down to suit the conditions of the work in hand. A shaft 32 iS mounted in the rear ends of the longitudinal bars 3 and is provided with a lever 33 with which coperates a hand latch 34 and a notched bar 35 to hold the lever in adjusted position. An arm 36 projected from the shaft 32 is connected by means of a link 37 with the rear portion of the beam 20. By proper manipulation of the lever 33, the rear portion of the beam 20 may be raised or lowered to move the drag or scraper blade 21 to the desired elevation.
A frame 39 of substantially U form has the rear portions of its side members curved downwardly and attached to opposite ends lof the drag or scraper blade 21. The front portion of the frame 39 is mounted in the lower portion of the frame 27 and is directed in its movement thereby. A chain 40 or analogous flexible connection has its end portions attached to the front portion of the frame 39 at opposite sides of a medial point,
and the middle portion of said chain or connection 40 is wound about the front portion of the shaft 25 between the front and rear members of the frame 27. Upon turning the shaft 25 either to the right or to the left the chain or connection 40 is moved so as to lengthen one end and shorten the opposite end, with the result that the front portion of the frame 39 is moved laterally thereby inclining the drag or scraper blade 21 in the desired direction and at the required angle. A chain or like connection 41 has its end portions connected to the rear portions of the longitudinal members of the frame 39 and its middle portion wound around the portion of the shaft 23 between the front and rear members of the frame 22. By turning the shaft 23 either' to the right or to the left, one end of the connection 41 is lengthened and the opposite end correspondingly shortened, thereby resulting in turning the frame 39 so as to incline the drag or scraper' blade 21 to the horizontal, thereby adapting the said blade to the slope or inclination of the roads surface.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a main frame provided with a drag and mounted upon wheels and having a vertical frame at its frontend, a front truck, a vertical shaft mounted in the front frame and having a swivel connection at its lower end with said truck, an operating lever mounted upon the frame, a link having rigid connection with the upper end of the said shaft and pivot connection with said operating lever, and a second link forming a pivotal connection between the vertical frame and the adjacent end of said lever.

In a machine of the character described the combination of a main frame'mounted upon rear wheels and provided at its front end with a vertical frame and supplied with a drag, a front truck, a shaft mounted in said vertical frame and having swivel connection at its lower end with the front truck, an operating lever, a link connecting the front end of the operating lever with the main frame, and a second link having rigid connection at its front endl with the upper end of said shaft and pivot connection at its rear end with the operating lever, said second link being channeled in its upper side to form a seat for the reception of the operating lever.
3. In combination a main frame provided with a drag and having a vertical frame at its front end, a beam having pivoted connection with said drag and provided at its front end with a clevis passed through the said vertical frame and directed in its vertical movements thereby, a bail or crank shaft having its middle portion mounted in a bearing of said beam and having its end portions mounted in the main frame, and means for adjusting said beam to regulate the elevation of said drag.

In combination with a main frame, a beam provided with a drag and mounted upon the main frame for vertical adjustment, a guide at the front end of the main frame for directing the beam in its vertical movements, a brace extending through and connected with the opposite ends of the drag a crank shaft having its middle portion j ournaled to the rear portion of said beam and having its ends mounted in parts of said main frame, means for adjusting the beam to vary the elevation of the drag, and means operatively connected with the brace for tilting said drag.
5. In combination a main frame, a beam, means for directing the front end of the beam in its vertical adjustments, a crank shaft connecting the rear portion of the beam with the main frame, means for moving the front end of the beam vertically, other means for moving the rear portion of the beam vertically, a second frame provided with a drag, and mounted upon the said beam, means for moving the front portion of said second frame laterally, and other means for tilting said second frame to vary the inclination of the drag with reference to the horizontal.
6. In combination a main frame provided at its front with a substantially vertical frame, a beam having its front portion passed through said vertical frame and having a frame 27 near its front end, a crank shaft having pivotal connection with the eeopee rear portion of the beam and with the main frame, a frame 22 projected upward from the rear portion of the beam, a U frame 39 having its front portion mounted in the frame 27 and having its rear portion provided With a drag which is pivotally Connected with the said beam, a shaft mounted in the frames 27 and 22, a shaft 23 mounted in the frame 22, flexible connections having 10 their middle portions Wound around the respective shafts and their end portions conQ nectedzto the side members of said U frame, and means for adjusting the aforesaid beam vertically.
