DAvID E. DARNELL, E MooaEsrowN, NEW JERSEY,
'p sHLVVrERfFASTENER SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 364,707I dated .Tune j 4, 1887,
I Application filed February 17, 1887. Serial No. 227,894. (No model.) l
To aZZ whom zit may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID E. DARNELL, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Moorestown, in the county of Burlington, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful -specification, and accompanying drawings, in
which- Figure 1 represents a top or plan view of a shutter fastener embodying my invention. Fig. 2 representsa front view thereof having a lower portion of the shutter broken away so as to show the finger-piece end of the lever, which is between the shutter and wall at the hinged end `of the shutter and adjacent to the windowsill. Fig. 3 represents a section of a portion in line a: x, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 represents a section in line y y, Fig. 3. Figs. Sand 6 represent views of a modification.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of a shutter-fastener which may be easily operated, is rellable in action, and possesses other advantages, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Referring to the drawings, Arepresents the fastener', which is of the form ofa lever, having at what may be termed its outer end a nose, B, and at the inner end a thumb or finger piece, C, said lever being mounted on a pivot or post, D, which may have a spike to be driven into a Wall, if of brick, stone, Ste., as in Figs. 1, 2, 3,01x aback plate to be screwed or nailed to a wall, if of wood, as in Figs. 5 and 6, it being seen .that the leverin its normal position extends horizontally and is approximately parallel to the shutter. The post l) enters the boss E of the lever and is preferably of conical form, the outer end of said post having akey, F, or-other device, whereby the boss is held in position, it being seen that the lever in its motions readily turns on the post as its pivot or axis. The periphery of the bossE at Yits inner end 1s cut away, forming shoulders, G G, and the post D is formed on its periphery adjacent to said shoulders, with a shoulder or toe, H, which,as will be seen, enters the space between the shoulders G G. I
Secured to the rear of the post D, or back plate thereof, is a spring, J, which rises from the same and stands somewhat forward, or is salient, so as to press the shutter, .when open, against the nose B, thus preventlng ratthng of the shutter. The fastener is shown in position holding the shutter open.
In order to release the shutter, the piece C is engaged by the thumb or fingers, so as to raise the relative end of the lever. A and consequently lower the nose B clear of the bottom edge of the shutter, whereby the shutter may be closed. When the shutter is pushed open its bottom edge rides on the nose B and thereby lowers the lever until said edgeclears the back of the nose, when the lever returns upwardly to its normal position, placing thenose in front of the shutter, it being noticed that. the inner arm of the lever is heavier than the outer arm thereof, and thus the nose reliably holds the shutter in locked or fastened condition.
Should the lever be forcibly operated in either direction, the shoulder G abuts against the toe H and limits the rising or lowering motion Vof the lever, whereby the nose B is always properly located for accomplishing the purposes of the lever A, and the thumb or fin-v ger piece C has its correct position preserved so as to be readily reached by hand, it also being noticed that said piece C is conveniently accessible as the lever reaches or approaches I the sill of the window.
Vhen the shutter is relieved of the dog or lever A, the spring J assists in starting said 8 shutter-toits closed position. Y
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A shutter-fastener having the lever A, with a straight end portion having the fingerpiece G, and a forwardly-projecting end portion with nose B, the latter adapted to engage the shutter, all substantially as described.
2. A shutter-fastener having the post D, 9 5 with fastening-point, a lever with boss E mounted on said post, the said lever having a straight end with a finger-piece, and a forwardly-projecting end portion witha nose, B, adapted to engage the shutter, all substantially v Ifo as described.
3. In a shutter-fastening, a lever mounted on a post and having its axial portion provided with shoulders, either of which is adapted to abut against a toe or shoulder on ,105 said post, substantially as described.
DAVIDl E. DARNELL.
