L. A. SCHMIDT.
VENTILATING HEAD SUPPORT 0R PILLOW.
Patented June 7, 1887.
N. PETERS. PhMo-Lithognplwr, war-1mm o a UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
LOUIS A. SCHMIDT, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
VENTlLATlNG HEAD-SUPPORT OR PILLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part: of Letters Patent No. 864,377, dated June '7, 1887.
Application filed March 12, 1857.
To aZZ whom it 11mg concern.-
Be it known that I, LoUIs A. SCHMIDT, of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ventilating Head-Supports or Pillows, of which the following is aspecification.
This invention relates to a new and in1- proved head-support or pillow for usein summer or in countries havinga hot climate; and the object of my invention is to provide a head-suport or pillow which is so constructed that the air can circulate through the same, thus keeping the head and upper part of the body of the person resting on said support cool and comfortable even in the hottest days.
The invention consists in a folding frame provided with braces, a piece of gauze or net ting held on the said frame, the upperpart of which netting is horizontal and the lower part inclined, all as will be fully described hereinafter, and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved ventilating head-support or pillow, the samebeing applied to a bed. Fig. 2 isalongitudinal seetional view of the same on the line a: m, Fig. 3.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same, showing one side folded, parts being broken out, Fig. 4 is an end view of the same, showing one side folded; Fig. 5 is a detail side and top view of a bolt for holding the gauze or netting.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The two side bars, A, are united by three crossbars, B B B. Oh the ends of the crossbars B and B the blocks 0 are secured, to which the standards D are pivoted in such a manner that they can fold inward and toward the erossbars.
On the inner side of each standard a brace, E, is pivoted, which serves to hold the standards in vertical position, the lower end of the is passed through an aperture, H, in each standard D in such a manner that the jaws L are on the inner sides, the bolts being held in place by the spring-pins K. A sheet or piece, N, of strong netting has strips, 0, of canvas or like material secured to its sides. One end of said sheetNis fastened securely to the crossbar B, and the side strips, 0, of said netting are held by the rivets M between the jaws L. By swinging up the standards D and bracing them by means of the braces E,'the nettingis drawn taut and serves as a pillow or head-rest that is thoroughly ventilated, as the air can circulate throngh the interstices of the netting and under the netting.
The netting can be adjusted by means of the bolts J,and can be held atdilIerent heights on the crossbars B and B. When not in use, the entire device can be folded very compactly by disengaging the braces E from the notches F, resting them against the standards D, and then folding the standards down upon the crossbars.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a headrest, the combination of the side bars, A, the cross-bars B B B", hinged standards D, the braces E, and the netting N, to secure it to the brace-bar B at one end,and held at the other end by clips in thestandards D, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a head-rest, the combination of the two side bars, united by cross bars B B B, the standards D, hinged on the ends of said cross-bars B B and provided with apertures H, braces E, hinged to the inner sides of the standards, bolts or clips J, passed through apertures II, projectingjaws on the bolts J, rivets M in the jaws, springpins K, passing through apertures in the bolts, and a piece of netting held on the crossbar and stretched over the cross-bars and standards D, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in pres ence of two subscribing witnesses.
LOUIS A. SCHMIDT.
