UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE ARNOLD \V. ZIMMERMAN, OF FERNXVOOD, ASSIGNQR OF ONE-HALF TO JAMES S. TOPPAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
GAS-FIXTU RE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,787, dated May24, 1887.
- Application filed November 27, 1886. Serial No. 220K116. (X model.)
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARNOLD W. ZIMMER- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fernwood, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Fixtures, which are fully set forth in the following specification,
reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which-- Figure 1 shows my improved fixture in perspective. Fig. 2 shows the essential or working parts of the same in sectional elevation.
Like letters refer to like parts.
The object of my invention is to provide a means whereby the gas maybe turned on and off the burners without being obliged to reach over the burner or shade, or to have chains dependent from the cock for such purpose, which are both unsightly and annoying,as well as expensive. To accomplish said end I-c0nstruct my fixture as follows, namely:
I provide a flanged socketpiece, f, which is threaded so as to screw to the pendent pipe at in the same hole which forms the seat of the plug I). Said socket-piece is formed with a shank, 6, having aconical bore, which forms the seat of the hollow plug 1), and said plug projects at the lower end of the socket at least a sulficient distance to permit a suitable at tachment, as a bar, j, to be attached to it so as to serve as a stop forthe plug in turning, although said stop might also be at the upper end of the plug, and by means of said bar j the plug may be turned; 01', if preferred, the end of the plug maybe adapted for a key with which it may be turned. Theend of the shank e terminates in a spur, Z,which forms a stop, against which the bar j or other suitable spur strikes as the plug is turned. Said plug is provided with a cavity, k, and through the side of the plug are bored one or more holes, 0, which fit over corresponding holes in the side of the shank a, so as to allow the gas to enter into the annular chamber (1, formed around the shank e by meansof the shell which is screw-threaded at its lower end to lit the threaded end of the shank c, and its up per end fits against the shoulder of the socketpiecef, so as to form a gas-lightjoint. Into said shell 9 are inserted pipes 71, carrying sockets i, which receive the burner-tips.
By this construction it will be seen that the cock is below instead of above the burners, and is far more convenient to reach and manage, and by the conical form of the plug it will by its own Weight tend to keep tight, and will not be affected by the heat of the burners. By
means of the shell 9 and flange f the annular ,cembination with a hollow conical plug provided with lateral openings fitting over corresponding holes in the shank e, and a shell, 9, forming with flange f a' chamber, d, substantially as specified.
ARNOLD \V. ZIMMERMAN.
