GAS-FIXTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it know-11 that we, GLENN R. CHAMBER- LAIN and 'ALBERT Gr.` SGHROEDER, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Fixtures; and wedo hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled the art to' which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relatestoy improvements in gas fixtures of the type' shown in our VPatents Nos. 1,019,131, and 1,019,132 granted March 5,1912.'
It is an object of thev invention to provide a fixture presenting a neat and attractive appearance, which may be located in close proximity to the wall of 'a`room with the major part ofthe fixtureconcealed from sight.
'Av further object of the invention is to rovide a construction which may be readily installed in houses whether already built 'or in the course of 'constriiction` A still Vfurther object is to provide the fixture with a new and` improved means for cutting off the flow of gas `and for locking the parts in'inop'erative position when the conduit attached' to the fixture for conducting the gas away is removed'therefrom.
Various other objects and 'purposes to gether with improved constructions for attaining them will be apparent as understanding is had o`f thel embodiment shfown in the accompanying drawings, in which;

In equipping a house to supply it with gas a' pipe 1 may beprovided which leads to and is connected in any lsuitable manner The fixture forming the subject matter of our invention includes a housing 2 connected to this pipe, it having' a reduced rear end 3 screw threaded for ready attachment thereto. The housing 2 is open at its front end and provided with upper of a gas cockv which may be of any approved standard construction. The forward end of the plug is formed hexagonal as shown at 9 for ready application of a wrench in its insertionin or removal from the housing, and at its rear end with a reduced. tapered extension 10y as best shown in Fig. 9. A rotary member 11 slightly tapered from front to' rear is located in a longitudinal opening or boring in the plug 7, and retained by the nut 12 threaded on the inner end 13 of said member. The extension 10 and member 11 are pro-vided with openings 14E as shown in Fig. 3 to form' a connecting passageway from the housing to the longitudinal opening 154 in therotary member A11. It will be evident that on rotation of the member 11 its passage l1 may be madeto move away from ,the passage 14 in the extension 10 thereby stopping the gas from the tube 1. Adjacent ,its forward end a disk 16 passes over the member 11 and isffixedly secured thereto, it having an integral extensionj17 extending outwardly over the part 9 of the plug 7 an'd'serving as a handle for the manual operation of the member 11. The plug 7 is bored to form an opening 18 of jcomparatively large diameter at its front end and the part 9 of the plug is cut away to permit the movement of handle 17 between two shoulders 19 which serve as stops to limit the movement of the handle and the rotation of the member 11 secured thereto. In one position of the handle against one of the stops the passages 14 are, in alinement permitting the iiow of gas While in the other position of the handle the iow of gas is stopped as will be readily apparent.
A finishing and covering cap 20 is provided and secured by means of screws or other suitable connections to the front end of the plug 7. The cap has a slot 21 in one side through which the end of handle 17 projects, and at either end widened portions 21aL are made in which the handle may seat at either eXtreme of its movements preventing the accidental movement of the handle when moved to proper position. Cap 2O has a circular opening 22 at its center and a metal arm 23 is pivotally mounted on the underside of the cap having one end 24 eX- tending through a slot in the side of the cap while its other end is enlarged to form a circular cover 25 adapted to close the opening 32 as shown in Fig. 4.
The forward end of the rotary member 11 is screw threaded and reduced side as shown at 26 adapting it to receive the coupling member 27 which carries a tube 28 having a slightly enlarged head 29 which, when the coupling is attached to the part 26 will be pressed tightly against the end thereof forming a substantial gas-tight connection. Any suitable conducting tube 30 may be secured to the metal tube 28 in any suitable manner.
A ring of spring metal 31 is attached to the disk 16 lying thereagainst for a portion of its circumference but having a portion normally bent outward and turned to form a shoulder 32 at its end. A pin 33 projects from the plug 7 within the opening 18y thereof and lies over the ring 31. In the position shown in Fig. 2 the gas is on and the handle 17 is free to move to the opposite shoulder 19. When it is moved to such position unless the end 32 of spring 31 is forced inwardly in some manner, pin 33 will ride j over the end interposing a stop and preventing the return movement of the handle 17, as indicated in Fig. 10. This will be the case when the coupling 27 is disconnected and no conduit is provided to carry the gas away from the fixture. With the lever turned so that the gas is cut off the end 32 striking against pin 33 locks the rotary member 11 against movement and gas cannot escape through the fixture by reason of any accidental or designed operation of the rotary member of the gas cock. It is only when the coupling 27 is attached to the end 26 that the rotary member of the gas cock can again be operated, it being evident, as
shown in Fig. 6, that when the coupling is attached its inner end bears against the spring 31 forcing the end 32 inward and out of the plane of the stop pin 33, handle 17 in such instance being free for movement.
With a iiXture of this construction very little of the mechanism appears in view and when the tube 30 is disconnected the openings 22 in the cap 20 may be closed as stated. The iiXture may be readily attached to a house already constructed by merely boring ahole through the base board 6 or any other suitable part of the house, inserting and attaching the housing 2 and connecting with the gas pipe. In houses in the course of construction the housing is attached before the base board is put in place, a solid plug being screwed into the housing to prevent the escape of gas. In finishing the house a suitable opening is provided in the base board and to permit its insertion over the outer end of thev housing 2 lips 4 are removed, the base board put in place, the lips 4 again attached to the housing and then fastened to the base board. Thev gas cock comprised of the plug 7 and rotary member 11 may be then connected with the housing by merely threading the plug into the housing.
Various changes in detail may be resorted to without departing from our invention which is defined in the appended claims and all modifications falling within the scope of said claims are to be considered as comprehended within our invention.
We claim:
1. A gas fixture comprising a plug having an opening therethrough7 a rotary member located in the opening, associated locking elements on the plug and rotary member, respectively, adapted in one position of said rotary member to lock it against rotation, and a couplingdetachably connected to the rotary member engaging4 against the locking element carried thereby and forcing it to inoperative position, substantially as described.
2. A gas Xture comprising a plug having an opening therethrough, a rotary member located in the opening, a pin projecting from the plug toward the rotary member, and a spring attached to the rotary member and movable therewith riding adjacent its end against the pin as the member is rotated, whereby on rotation of the member to one position the end o-f the spring passes by the pin and prevents the return of the rotary member, substantially as described.
3. In a gas fixture, a housing, a plug having a longitudinal opening detachably connected with and inserted in the housing, means to connect the housing with a gas pipe, a member rotatively mounted in the opening in the plug, means to prevent the flow of gas from the pipe through the member in one position thereof, means comprising associated locking elements carried. by the plug and member respectively for locking the member against rotation with the flow of gas stopped through said member, a conduit tube, and means for attaching said tube to the rotary member and simultaneously unlocking it for rotation.
