To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, OHARLEY ONEIL, a
, citizen of the United States of America, re-
siding at Point Marion, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in GasBurners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.-
This invention relates to a gas burner, and the primary object of my invention is to provide an automatic gas burner that can be advantageously used in connection with ranges, hot plates and other types of stoves employed for cooking purposes, the burner having provision for turning on and shutting ofi the supply of gas when a utensil is placed upon and removed from the stove.
Another object of this invention is to provide a burner with a normally closed spring pressed valve that is opened when a utensil is placed. above the burner.
A further object of this invention is to accomplish the above results by a mechanical construction that is simple, durable and highly efficient for the purposes for which it is intended.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a burner in accordance with this invention, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the same.
The reference numeral 1 denotes a valve body having the upper end thereof provided with an exteriorly screw threaded nipple 3, said nipple having a vertical opening 4 in communication with a vertical bore 5 formed in the valve body, the bore 5 being of a greater diameter than the opening 4 to provide a valve seat 6. The walls of the bore 5 are screw threaded at the lower end as at 5 thereof to receive a detachable screw plug 7 and arranged within said bore upon the plug is a coiled compression spring 8, the upper convolution of said spring surrounding the lower end 9 of a valve 10 that is normally held upon the seat 6 by the tension of the spring 8. The valve 10 has a stem 11 extending through the opening 4 Specification of Letters Patent.

and protruding from the upper end of the nipple 3. The valve body 1 has a connection 12 for a gas supply pipe whereby gas can be admitted to the bore 5 to pass through the opening 4 of the nipple 3 when the valve 10 is lowered.
Screwed upon the nipple 3 is a frustoconical shaped mixer casing 13 having the bottom thereof provided with openings 14 for admitting air to the mixer. The top ,of the mixer is formed integral with a burner 15 of the spider type, said burned having radiating arms 16 with the tops thereof provided with openings 17. The burner 15 has an opening 18 establishing communication bet-ween the arms 16 and the mixer 13, and the top of said burner has a stutiing box 19 provided with packing 20 and a gland 21. Extending through the stuffing box 19, the burner 15, the opening 18 and resting upon the top of the stem 11 is a push rod 22 having the top thereof provided with a head 23. The push rod 22 extends through the grate or utensil support 24 of a stove 25, with the head 23 of said rod above the utensil support 24.
When a utensil 26 is placed upon the support 24, the utensil engages the head 23 and lowers the rod 22, thereby pushing clownwardly upon the stem 11 and opening the valve 10. Gas is admitted to the mixer and commingles with air as it passes into the burner and escapes through the openings 17 to be ignited. Immediately upon the utensil being placed upon the support 24, the gas can be ignited and when the utensil is removed, the push rod 22 is released and is elevated by the stem 11; the spring 8 closing the valve 6 and shutting off the supply of gas to the burner.
I reserve the right to ,use a pilot light in connection with the burner whereby it will be unnecessary to use a match or taper each and every time the burner is to be used.
What I claim is 1. In a gas burner comprising a valve body having a bore threaded at its lower end and further having means for connecting it to a source of gas supply, a screw plug en gaging the threads of said bore, an exteriorly screw threaded nipple formed integral with the upper end of said valve body, said valve body at one end of said bore having the wall thereof beveled to provide a valve seat, a mixer casing mounted upon said valve body and detachably connected to said nipple, said nipple projecting above the bottom of and into the mixer casing, a burner of spider-like construction formed integral with the upper end of and communicating with said mixer, a valve within the valve body, a spring interposed between said valve and plug, a stem projecting from the valve and extending through said nipple into said mixer casing, and a push rod of greater diameter than said stem, said rod extending through said burner and into said mixer and connected to said stem, the lower end of said rod engaging the nipple forlimiting the opening movement of the valve.
2. In a gas burner, a valve body having means for connecting it to a source of gas supply, a nipple formed integral with the upper end of and communicating with the interior of said valve body, said valve body having its inner face at its upper end formed with a valve seat, a spring controlled valve normally engaging said seat, a mixer casing mounted upon the valve body and connected to said nipple, said nipple opening into the mixer casing, a burner mounted upon and communicating with said mixer casing, a valve stem projecting from the valve and extending through the nipple into the mixer casing, and a push rod extending through the burner and into the mixer casing and conneeted to the upper end of said stem.
