- the present invention is directed to a remotely operated powder-charge-operated bolt setter for driving anchoring elements into a structure, such as in attaching exothermal plates to chill molds, and, more particularly, it is directed to a support arrangement for the bolt setter so that it can be supported on the structure into which the anchoring element is to be inserted while a compressing safety action is exerted on the barrel of the bolt setter in preparation for its firing.
- the primary object of the present invention is to provide a support arrangement for a remotely operated bolt setter so that the requisite compressing safety action can be easily achieved.
- a remotely operated bolt setter can effect the desired compressing safety action by securing a laterallylextending arm, supporting a downwardly directed abutment member, on an extension member which is secured to and extends from the bolt setter.
- the contact arm and its abutment member serves as a support for the bolt setter on the structure into which the anchoring elements are to be inserted.
- its extension member can be pivoted relative to the contact arm so that the bolt setter can be pressed against the surface into which the anchoring element is to be inserted.
- the abutment member affords a counterbearing for the bolt setter during the compressing safety action.
- the operator In remotely operating the bolt setter, such as in attaching exothermal plates within a chill mold, the operator stands on the narrow mold rim on which the contact arm and its abutment member support the bolt setter and by pivoting the extension member the bolt setter can be pressed against the exothermal plate while the abutment member prevents any slipping of the bolt setter.
- the abutment member is adjustably attachable in different positions along the contact arm for adaptation to various wall thicknesses of the mold or other structure on which the remotely operated bolt setter is used.
- the contact arm is pivotally secured to the extension member. so that it is retained by means of a spring in a neutral position at an oblique angle to the extension member, that is with the portion of the extension member located on the opposite side of the contact arm from the bolt setter arranged at an angle of less than 90f to the contact arm.
- the bolt setter is spaced from the surface of the structure into which the anchoring element is to be inserted whereby the bolt setter can be easily positioned for operation. After the bolt setter has been positioned, by pivoting the extension member about the contact arm, the bolt setter can be aligned perpendicularly with the structure and its barrel can be compressed for providing the necessary safety action in preparation for firing.
- Another preferred feature of the invention is the use of a bracket for securing the contact arm to the extension member so that it can be movably positioned along the extension member to accommodate varying dimensions between the contact arm and the bolt setter.
- FIG. l is an elevational view, partly in section, illustrating a preferred embodiment of the present invention.
- FIG. 2 is a schematic representation of the device disclosed in FIG. 1 being manipulated by an operator for securing plates to the interior of a mold.
- a powder-charge-operated bolt setter l is positioned at the lower end of a rod-shaped extension member which has a handle 3 positioned at its oppositely arranged upper end.
- a release button4 is positioned in the handle 3 for actuating a remote firing mechanism for the bolt setter, this remote mechanism is not shown since it does not form a part of the invention.
- a holding bracket 7 Positioned intermediate the ends of the extension member 2 is a holding bracket 7 which can be secured in different positions along the extension member by means of a screw 5 and a turning knob 6. Secured to the bracket 7 is a pin 8 on which a contact arm 9 is pivotally mounted.
- an elongated spring 11 is secured at one end to the bracket and at its other, end to the contact arm so that the contact arm is held at an acute angle to the upper part of the extension member, that isthe part of the extension member located on the opposite side of the contact arm from the bolt setter.
- a slider 12 Positioned on the contact arm 9 and spaced laterally outwardly from the extension member 2 is a slider 12 to which a downwardly extending abutment member orstrap is attached.
- a plurality of recesses 14 are formed in the upper surface of the contact arm and a pin 15 is positionable through the slider 12 into these recesses for positioning the slider and the abutment strap at different locations spaced laterally from the extension member.
- FIG. 2 a mold 21 is shown with an exothermal plate 20 placed in position to be secured to the mold by means of the bolt setter 1.
- the bolt setter l is lowered by means of the extension member 2 downwardly into the mold until the contact arm 9 rests on the rim 21b of the mold.
- the abutment strap 13 is disposed in contact with the outer surface 210 of the mold and holds the bolt setter l and its extension member 2 in position. Since the spring 11 normally holds the extension member at an oblique angle to the contact member, note FIG. I, initially the extension member assumes the position shown in dashed lines in FIG.
- the abutment strap 13 is secured against the outer wall 210 of the mold and prevents any displacement of the overall device. Accordingly, the operator standing on the narrow mold rim 21b can carry out the necessary operating steps in safety and without any difficulty.
- a powder-charge-operated bolt setter for the remote firing of anchoring elements into a receiving structure includes a device for driving anchoring elements having a firing end from which the anchoring elements are driven, an elongated extension member secured at one end thereof to said device and having a free-end spaced from said device, wherein the improvement comprises a contact arm mounted on said extension member at a position spaced between said device and the free end of said extension member and said contact arm extending laterally from said extension member, said contact arm and extension arm being interconnected so that they can be pivoted relative to one another, an abutment member attached to said contact arm at a'position spaced from said extension member and extending outwardly from said contact am so that when said contact arm is supported on the member into which the anchoring element is to be inserted by said device said abutment member bears against a surface of the member into which the anchoring member is to be inserted which surface faces oppositely to the surface
- a powder-charge-operated bolt setter as set forth in claim 1, wherein means are arranged for adjustably securing said abutment member to said contact arm so that the distance between said abutment member and said extension member can be varied.
- a powder-charge-operated bolt setter as set forth in claim 2, wherein said means for adjustably securing said abutment members to said contact arm comprising a slider movably secured to said contact arm and having said abutment member attached thereto, a plurality of recesses formed in and spaced across the dimension of said contact arm extending laterally from said extension member, and a pin extending through said slider and removably securable within one of said recesses in said contact arm for adjustably attaching said abutment member to said contact arm.
- a holding bracket assembly is movably secured to said extension member and comprises a holding bracket fitted to said extension member, a screw and turning knob for adjustably securing said bracket to said extension member, a pin extending through said bracket and positioned within said contact arm for pivotaLLY fixing said contact arm on said bracket, and a spring attached to said bracket and to said contact arm for positioning the portion of said extension member on the opposite side of said bracket from said device at an acute angle with said contact arm.
