Abstract
An explosive cartridge driven setting gun is carried at the lower end of a pivotal lever member and it includes a supporting or bearing arm which is adapted to extend over the top of a wall to which a plate is to be affixed to provide a pivoting support for the arm. The arm carries a frame assembly at its lower end with extensible supporting arms for supporting a plate to be positioned on a side of the wall particularly a chill plate for a mold wall. The supporting arms are biased in an outward or extensible position at which they support the plate directly in front of the setting gun. An angle lever carried at the upper end of the frame is biased downwardly to engage the top of the plate and hold it on the supporting arms. When the plate is to be set on the side of the mold, the handle is pivoted outwardly to cause the lower frame assembly to move inwardly with the plate and to cause the angle lever and the supporting frame members to move inwardly out of complete engagement with the plate. At this time, the setting gun is actuated and an anchoring bolt is driven through the plate to hold it to the mold side wall.

At this time, the setting gun is actuated and an anchoring bolt is driven through the plate to hold it to the mold side wall.

, sum 2 BF 3- ELMAR MAIER mylwa/m fmm ATTORNEYS CARTRIDGE EXPLOSION OPERATED BOLT SETTING GUN FOR FASTENING IRON CHILL PLATES SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION This invention relatesin general to the construction of devices for fastening heavy plates to inaccessible side walls and, in particular, to the construction of a cartridge driven bolt setting gun which is mounted on a pivotal support lever which may be suspended over a wall structure and which carries means for supporting a plate member to be secured to a side wall by the operation of the gun carried on the frame member.
Iron chill plates are employed, for example, in mold constructions and they serve to retain heat in the upper part of such molds. There are two types of chill plates, those which supply heat by their own combustion and those which prevent a too rapid elimination of heat by an insulating effect. Heretofore, the iron chill plates were introduced into the mold with a special linkage for alignment on the mold wall before the fastening operation to secure the plate to the mold wall. The special linkage which was provided for aligning the plate with the mold wall had the form of a wide outwardly extending two-tine fork device whose ends were bent off by about 90. The plate is placed on the tines at the bent off ends and introduces into the mold. This method and device has the disadvantage that the linkage and the fastening device interfere with each other during handling and the plates can easily drop. In addition, two men are required to position the plate with such a method.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a device which provides an easy means for positioning and anchoring a plate to an inaccessible side wall of a wall structure, such as a mold. The invention includes a support frame which is carried on. a pivotal lever which may be pivoted on a supporting arm which is adapted to be slung over the top of the mold wall structure. The arm carries at its lower end, a frame structurefor supporting the plate to be positioned on the wall and also for supporting a setting gun in a position to fire an anchoring device through the plate to secure it to the wall structure. By mounting the setting gun directly on the supporting frame for the plate, it is possible for the complete operation to be carried out by a single man rapidly and exactly. The frame holder advantageously includes two or more oppositely arranged stirrups for supporting members which are adjustable in length so that they may be adapted to different plate sizes and also be adapted to hold the plate at a position in which it is directly in front of the setting gun. The plate is supported at the U-shaped receiving recesses at the outer ends of the supporting arms and the arms are spring loaded so that they project outwardly and hold the plate at a spaced location from the end of the setting gun. When the device is positioned on the wall, the lever supporting the frame is pivoted to cause the plate with the supporting arms to move inwardly and be pressed against the gun which then fires after the arms have moved to a position at which they do not interfere with the tight holding of the plate against the wall structure. The plate is supported by arms in the frame which form a three point support. A central top supporting point is formed by a pivotal bearing arm which is urged in a direction to engage downwardly over the top of the plate. The other two bearing points engage the plate from below and provide a support for the plate during the setting operation.
Accordingly, it is an object of the invention to provide a device for positioning plates on inaccessible side walls which includes a pivotal lever member which is adapted to be supported on the wall structure and which carries at its lower end a frame for supporting a plate to be set together with a setting gun which is positioned to drive an anchoring device through the plate and into the wall structure.
A further object of the invention is to provide a setting device which includes simple means for positioning a plate by a single operator and for operating a setting device to secure the plate in position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device for setting plates which is simple in design, rugged in construction, and economical to manufacture.
The various features of novelty which characterize the invention are pointed out with particularity in the claims annexed to and forming a part of this disclosure. For a better understanding of the invention, its operating advantages and specific objects attained by its uses, reference should be had to the accompanying drawings and descriptive matter in which there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring to the drawings in particular, the invention embodied therein, comprises a device for setting plates, for example, for arranging chill plates in respect to a mold which includes a handle lever or support member 11 which is adapted to be pivotally supported on a bearing arm 16 which is positioned to be arranged over the wall structure on which the plate is to be set. The handle or support member 11 includes a frame generally designated 50 at its lower end for holding and positioning a plate such as a chill plate 21 in a position in association with a wall to which it is to be fastened and aligned with a setting gun generally designated 1 which is also carried on the frame. The handle support 11 includes a shank portion 10 which is carried in a clamp plate or bracket 15 which is pivoted at 25 to the supporting arm 16. The clamp 15 is secured by means of a screw 13 which is tightened by a handle 14.
In accordance with a feature of the invention, the frame 50 includes a U-shaped stirrup, generally designated 3, having side legs 3a and 3b which extend outwardly substantially normal to a support or bracket 2 which is carried at the lower end of the setting gun I. The leg portions 30 and 3b each carries an extensible supporting flap for bearing plates 7 and 8, each of which includes a rivet 5 and 6, respectively, which is confined in a groove at 3c and 3d, respectively, for in which are urged by a leaf spring 9 to an outer or ex tended position.
In the extended position, the support arms 7 and 8 receive and support a chill plate 21, which is adapted to be affixed to a mold 4, as shown in Fig. 3. The plate rests at its lower end on the supports arms 7 and 8 and its upper end is engaged by an angle lever, or holding member 20, which is pivoted on a clamp member 19 carried at the lower end of the shank portion immediately above the setting gun 1. The clamp 19 may be secured in a desired position along the shank portion 10 by means of a screw clamp member 18. The angle lever includes an outer end portion 20c having a downwardly extending portion 20b which engages behind the plate 21. The arm is urged into an engagement position by a torsion spring 22 which engages around a fulcrum pin 23 carried on the bracket 19.
The frame is adapted to hold the plate 21 in a posi' tion in which the plate is held at a spaced location from a tip 24 of an anchoring element which is adapted to be fired by the setting gun I through the plate and into a receiving wall. The gun I is loaded preferably before the plate is in position and it may be fired by actuating a trigger mechanism or pushbutton 12 carried at the upper end of the handle 11. The bearing arm 16includes an adjustably positioned member 52 which has a depending stirrup or engagement arm 17 which is adapted to engage against the inside surface of a wall 4, as shown in Fig. 3, when the device is to be operated.
The method of operation of the device is as follows:
When a plate such as a plate 21 is to be positioned on the wall structure 4 shown in Fig. 3, the arm 16 is positioned over the top of the wall so as to engage the top wall 4a and the limit arm 17 engages behind the wall. The plate 21 is already positioned in the frame 50 and the angle lever 20 is urged by the spring 22 in a downward direction to cause the end portion 20b to engage behind the inside top corner of the plate 21. The downward rotational movement of the arm 20 about fulcrum pin 21 is limited by a stop 20a which contacts the shank portion 10. The bottom end of the plate 21 rests in depressions 7a and 8a of the respective extensible arm portions 7 and 8 and these depressions prevent the plate from sliding off.
The handle 11 is moved in a direction of the arrow f, as shown in FIG. 1, to cause the plate 21 to be pressed against the wall surface 4b and to subsequently cause the frame 50 to move further to advance the setting gun 1 toward the plate 21. After the plate 21 contacts the wall surface 4b, the arms 7 and 8 and the lever arm 20 are moved backwardly against the force of their associated spring so that the plate clears the recesses 7a and 8a and also the end 20b of the arm 20, and the point 24 of the anchoring device is-pressed against the outer surface of the plate. In this position, the setting gun I of the setting device is ready to be fired.
During the inward movement of the frame 50, the angle lever 20 is moved in a direction of the arrow 3, as indicated in FIG. 3, which causes it to ride up to the edge of the plate 21. in the course of the pressing movement of the handle 11 in the direction of the arrow f, the projecting nail point 24 penetrates into the plate and provides an additional means for holding the plate 21 against sliding as the plate becomes released by the arms 7 and 8 and by the arm 20. The arms 7 and 8 move in a direction of the arrow h by the amount by which the arms 7 and 8 project from the plate 21 plus the pressing path of the setting gun 1 which is necessary for safety reasons. The chill plate 21 thus bears flat against the mold wall 4b, as shown in Fig. 3, and the firing of the cartridge can be effected by pressing the pushbutton 12.
While a specific embodiment of the invention has been shown and described in detail to illustrate the ap plication of the principles of the invention, it will be understood that the invention may be embodied otherwise without departing from such principles.
What is claimed is:
1. An explosive force driven device for setting plates to a wall, for example,,to a wall of a mold structure, comprising a handle member, means for pivotally supporting the handle member on the wall, a frame carried on said handle member including at least one support arm for supporting the plate to be set, and a setting gun carried on said frame in a position at which it is aligned with the plate on the support arm for discharging a setting element into the plate for anchoring the plate into the wall.

An explosive force driven device, according to claim 1, wherein said frame inclues at least one first support arm structure adapted to be arranged below the plate and to receive the plate thereon and at least one second support arm structure carried on said handle and being engageable with the top of said plate.
3. An explosive force driven device, according to claim 2, wherein said first support arm structure c'omprises an extensible arm on each side of said frame, and means mounting said support arm on said frame for extensible and retractable movement. a

An explosive force driven device, according to claim 2, wherein said at least one first support arm structure comprises two bottom support arms, means mounting said bottom support arms on said frame for extensible and retractable movement in directions toward and away from said setting gun, and said second support arm structure comprising a top support arm pivotally carried on said frame and being engageable with the top of the plate to be set.
5. An explosive force driven device, according to claim 4, including means urging said bottom support arms at the bottom of said plate into an extended position and second spring means urging said top support arm in a direction toward said plate.
6. An explosive force driven device, according to claim 4, wherein said bottom support arms include two extensible arm portions at the bottom of said plate and said top support arm comprises a single arm engageable with the top of said plate forming a three point support for said plate.

An explosive force driven device for setting plates to a wall, for example, of a mold structure, comprising an elongated handle, a support member connected to said handle and adapted to be engaged over a support structure such as the top of the wall, bracket means on said support member for pivotally supporting said handle from said member, a setting gun carried adjacent the lower end of said handle, first and second lateral bottom support arms mounted below said setting gun and carried by said handle, said first and second support arms including respective first and second extensible portions, said setting gun having a discharge for an anchoring element on one side thereof, a third supporting arm carried on said handle and positioned above said setting gun in a position above said setting gun in a position to contact the top of a plate to be set to the wall, said handle being pivotal on said first support member to move the setting gun discharge in a direction toward the plate and the wall.
8. An explosive force driven device, according to claim 7, including trigger means carried by said handle for operating said setting gun to discharge the anchoring device through the plate.
9. An explosive force driven device, according to claim 7, including first spring means associated with said first and second support arms for biasing said arms to an extended position, second spring means connected to said top support arm for pivoting said top support arm in a direction toward engagement with the top of said plate, said top support armand said first and second support arms being moveable against the associated first and second spring means upwardly over the edge of the plate during the movement of said handle to force said plate against a receiving wall.

An explosive force driven device, according to claim 9, wherein said first and second support arms include receiving recesses on the tops thereof for receiving the plates, said arms being deflectable by engagement with a wall structure to move the plate out of the recesses beyond the end of the support arms.
11. An explosive force driven device, according to claim 9, wherein said pivotal support arm includes an outer surface shaped to be deflected by engagement with a wall surface upwardly beyond the top of the plate to pennit disengagement of the plate, said setting gun being movable by pivoting of said handle to engage the anchoring element therein with the plate to hold the plate during disengagement of said support arms from said plate.
Claims (11)
1. An explosive force driven device for setting plates to a wall, for example, to a wall of a mold structure, comprising a handle member, means for pivotally supporting the handle member on the wall, a frame carried on said handle member including at least one support arm for supporting the plate to be set, and a setting gun carried on said frame in a position at which it is aligned with the plate on the support arm for discharging a setting element into the plate for anchoring the plate into the wall.
2. An explosive force driven device, according to claim 1, wherein said frame inclues at least one first support arm structure adapted to be arranged below the plate and to receive the plate thereon and at least one second support arm structure carried on said handle and being engageable with the top of said plate.
3. An explosive force driven device, according to claim 2, wherein said first support arm structure comprises an extensible arm on each side of said frame, and means mounting said support arm on said frame for extensible and retractable movement.

An explosive force driven device, according to claim 2, wherein said at least one first support arm structure comprises two bottom support arms, means mounting said bottom support arms on said frame for extensible and retractable movement in directions toward and away from said setting gun, and said second support arm structure comprising a top support arm pivotally carried on said frame and being engageable with the top of the plate to be set.
5. An explosive force driven device, according to claim 4, including means urging said bottom support arms at the bottom of said plate into an extended position and second spring means urging said top support arm in a direction toward said plate.
6. An explosive force driven device, according to claim 4, wherein said bottom support arms include two extensible arm portions at the bottom of said plate and said top support arm comprises a single arm engageable with the top of said plate forming a three point support for said plate.

An explosive force driven device for setting plates to a wall, for example, of a mold structure, comprising an elongated handle, a support member connected to said handle and adapted to be engaged over a support structure such as the top of the wall, bracket means on said support member for pivotally supporting said handle from said member, a setting gun carried adjacent the lower end of said handle, first and second lateral bottom support arms mounted below said setting gun and carried by said handle, said first and second support arms including respective first and second extensible portions, said setting gun having a discharge for an anchoring element on one side thereof, a third supporting arm carried on said handle and positioned above said setting gun in a position above said setting gun in a position to contact the top of a plate to be set to the wall, said handle being pivotal on said first support member to move the setting gun discharge in a direction toward the plate and the wall.
8. An explosive force driven device, according to claim 7, including trigger means carried by said handle for operating said setting gun to discharge the anchoring device through the plate.
9. An explosive force driven device, according to claim 7, including first spring means associated with said first and second support arms for biasing said arms to an extended positIon, second spring means connected to said top support arm for pivoting said top support arm in a direction toward engagement with the top of said plate, said top support arm and said first and second support arms being moveable against the associated first and second spring means upwardly over the edge of the plate during the movement of said handle to force said plate against a receiving wall.

An explosive force driven device, according to claim 9, wherein said first and second support arms include receiving recesses on the tops thereof for receiving the plates, said arms being deflectable by engagement with a wall structure to move the plate out of the recesses beyond the end of the support arms.
11. An explosive force driven device, according to claim 9, wherein said pivotal support arm includes an outer surface shaped to be deflected by engagement with a wall surface upwardly beyond the top of the plate to permit disengagement of the plate, said setting gun being movable by pivoting of said handle to engage the anchoring element therein with the plate to hold the plate during disengagement of said support arms from said plate.
