AMERICA LANE, OF TAUNTOII, MASSACHUSETTS.
HOLDBACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,473, dated May 24, 1881.
Application filed April 9.1, 1887. Serial No.235,588. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AMERICA LANE, of Taunton, in the county of Bristol and State of Mes sachusetts, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Holdbacks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view, and Fig. 2 a seclional detail, of my new holdbackp My invention consists in the combination of a holdback slotted at its outer end and a guardspring which retains the holdbaek-strap in place, but which allows the holdback-strap to be readily put in place and released.
In the drawings, a is a section of a shaft; 1), the holdback, against which holdback-strap f bears; and d is a guard-spring, which is fixed at one end to holdloack b, is free at the other end, and passes through slot 1) in the outer end of holdback b. Guard spring (I keeps the holdback-strap in place when the strap is slack, and yet readily yields to allow the strap to be put in place or released, the spring being arrested, however, when sprung to let the strap slip in or out by the outer end wall of slot I).
The holdback is preferably provided with a threaded tang. as shown, by which it is easily fixed upon ashaft. Thearresting of the guardspring at a point between the free and fixed ends of the spring reduces the danger of breakingpf the spring to a minimum, and is a novel feature of my invention.
hat I claim is- In combination, slotted holdback I) and guardspring (2, arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
