PATENT QFFIca.
CHARLES. BARCLAY, OF HANCOCK, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN WATCH-BARRELS.
Specification fofming part of Letters Patent No. 182,629, dated September 26, 1876; application filed March 18, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES BARCLAY, of Hancock, in the county of Houghton and State of Michigan, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Mainspring-Barrels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a plan view of my mainspring-barrel. Fig. 2 is a plan View of my mainspring-barrel with the plate 0 and spring of Fig. 1 removed. Figs, 3, 4, and 5 are detail plan views of my mainspring-barrel.
My invention relates to watches; and it consists in a reversible barrel for relieving the train and main barrel in case of any accident to the mainspring or winding part of the watch, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, A represents the ordinary mainspring-barrel of a watch, with the winding arbor B passing centrally through the same. 0n the bottom of the barrel A are fastened three curved flanges, a, between which are inserted three clicks, b, with springs behind their inner ends for throwing them outward, and a covering-plate, C, holds them in their proper places. Around the flanges a is placed a steel barrel, D, fitting within the barrel A and held by the covering-plate C. In the edge of the central opening of the barrel D are made notches a, for the clicks 1) to take into. G is the mainspriug, fitted within the barrel D, and its outer end hooked thereto, its inner end being hooked to the winding-arbor B in the usual manner.
The object of the interior reversible barrel D is to relieve and protect the train and mainspring-barrel from damage in case of the mainspring breaking, or any part connected with it, such as click, ratchet, or hook.
The recoil of the broken or detached mainspring does not come upon the main barrel A, but upon the inside barrel D, which, taking the full force, instantly reverses, thereby accomplishing the object desired.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the mainspring-barrel A, interior reversible barrel D, having notches 0c, the clicks 1), covering-plate C, mainspring G, and winding-arbor B, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES BARCLAY. Witnesses;
JOHN S. DYMOCK, D. D. HENDRICK.
