Description

(No Model) 0. N. PERKINS 8: J. P. SGOLLAY.
SNAP HOOK.
No. 527,286. Patented Oct. 9,1894.
m gill E8856 IJVVEJVIOQS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES N. PERKINS AND JOHN P. SOOLLAY, OF LAWRENCE, MASSACHU- SETTS; SAID SCOLLAY ASSIGNOR TO DANIEL GALLAGHER, OF SAME PLACE.
SNAP-HOOK.
SPECIFICATIQNforming part of Letters Patent No. 527,286, dated October 9,1894. Application filed April 23,1894:- Serial No. 508,697. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
7 Be it known that we, CHARLES N. PERKINS and J OHN P. SCOLLAY, citizens of the United States, residing at Lawrence, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Snap-Hooks; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art towhich. it appertains to make and use the same.
The nature of this invention consists in certain improvements in safety snap hooks, so that, as the thing to be held is snapped into the hook, there is a look, controlled by a spring, which, when thrown into place by the article to be fastened, locks the tongue and prevents it from slipping back, thus securely holding whatever is intended to be fastened; all of which will be hereinafter more particularly described.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification: Figure 1 represents the side view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section with the snap closed and locked. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section with the snap open.
The snap is made of metal. I
A represents the stock or lower part of the snap.
B represents the tongue which is fastened to A by a pivot, a.
O is the spring which acts upon the tongue, B, and upon the lock lever, D.
E is the hook end of the snap.
F is the flat end where the rein is fastened.
G is a slot in F to put the leather strap operates upon the tongue, B, to throw it into its proper position in Figs 1 and 2.
The two check pieces, I) b, on the side of the tongue, B, protect the lock lever from being interfered with accidentally.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a safety snap-hook, the combination of the stock A, the lock-lever D, the tongue B, both being pivoted to the stock, the tongue having checks or guards; and the spring 0, for holding the lever D in its two positions, and bearing on the tongue; all substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof we afiix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES N. PERKINS. JOHN P. SGOLLAY.
