SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,258, dated May 17, 1887.
Application filed May 24, 1886. Serial No. 203,130.
Ta aZZ whom it may c0ncern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT G. RICE, a eitizen of the United StateS of America, residing at Georgetown, in the county of Williarnsonand State of Texas,- haveinvented certain new and useful ImprovementsinScreens, of which the following is a specification, refereneebeing had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in screen-protectors for the protection of the person while sleeping or in a reelining posture; and it consists in the peonliar construction, combination, and arrangement of the parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully shown and deseribed. v
In the aceompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation embodying my improvement in screen-proteotors. Fig. 2 is asectional view of the same, and Figs. 3 and4 are detailviews of the device.
The objeet of my invention is not only to protect the exposed portions of the persons of adults and infants froxn the anoyance of flics and mosquitoes, &c., while sleeping, but also to provide, as an adj 11net thereof a b00krest for the convenience of reading in a reclining posture, and meehanism for hoisting the device out of the way when not in use.
In the construction of my screenprotector the size of the deviee may be determined by the purpose to which it is to be applied, and a distinction be made between those for use of adnlts and those for infants, the upper and exposed portion of the person of adults only needing protection, while the device may also be employed for thns proteeting infants, and also proteeting them fron1 cold-air drafts loy throwing over the frame ashawl or other suitable article.
The sereen-frame A is supported upon its curved horizontal wire base B, the ends of the strand being projected through eyes a, provided one at each end of the arehwire C.
Aroh-wire 0 has coiled aronnd the centerof its arch and projeeting therefrom the longitudinal wire D, whieh is curved to form the oval-shaped head of the deviee, and the opposite end of the longitudinal wire D is formed into a loop whieh inclasps, and is thus secnred to the strand of the wire base B.
The ends of central arch-wire, E, are also looped to inclasp the strand of wire base B,
(No modcl.)
and it is braced where it intersects longitudinal wire D by means of the auxiliary strand F, with which these interseeting wires are tied.
The auxiliary strand F is finer in degree than the other strands employed, and its ends entwine and are seeured to base wre= B at points intermediately between longitudinal wire D and central arch-wire, E. Auxiliary strand F thus arranged serves not only to tie said intersecting wires, but it is curved at F F to complete the curved conformation of the head of the device, the netting G, With whiel1 theframe A is inclosed, being secured thereto, as shown.
The frame-worlc of the screen may be constructed of brass or galvanized wire, or wire havingstrands eovered with any suitable fabric or material.
The netting or gauze G is sewed or othel* wise secured to the wire base B, and extends ont aronnd and beyond the same a sufiieient distance to prevent ingress of flics throngh any apertures caused by inequalities of surface beneath the saine, and it also extends ont beyond the front end of the fratne a suffioient distance to enable the opening in that end to be closed therewith. For the convenienee of adnlts Wh0 may desire to read thus protected, book-holder H may be employed in connection with my soreen-protector. It consists of the shelf Z), having fonder (1. It is supported by wires e, secured thereto at either end thereof, and terminating in loopf, which is hooked upon lon gitudinal wire D.
The fender d consists of the wooden slat g, having pivotally secured thereto the inwardlyinelined slightly curved metallie springs h.
The book is inserted between the baek of shelf I) and springs h, which retain the leaves of the book in position. Thehoistingcord L is attached to longitudinal wire D and passed over a cord-pnlley seenred to eeiling to enable the device to be swung up out of the way when out of use.
I.a1n aware that it is not new to provide a sereen eonsisting of a frame, upon which is supported netting or ganze extending beyond the sides thereof said frame being seenred in the desired position by means of a cord and pulley, a snpportingbar, or other suitable suspending medinm; but 1ny invention is designed as an improvement on snob devices, and I dispense with the use of all means for suspend- IOO ing the screen and provide the same With a base, to which are connected the nds of the wires, over whieh is placed the gauze or netting, thus always insuring the proper retention of the screen in position, and in addition thereto I secure to the central longitudinal wire the suspending-wires of a bock-support comprising a shelf to the front end of which are connected the ends of inwardly-bentsprings I0 for securely retaining the book in position.
It Will be seen that the upper end of the supporting-wires is so bent as to give the book holder or support the proper inclination required in reading the book retained therein.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, 1s
1. The combination, with theWire frame and the base to Which the ends of the Wires of said frame are connected, of the auxiliary strands bracing the aroh-wire of said frame, and the book-holder having the upper end of its supp0rting-Wires bent and connected to the longitudinal wire of Said frame, substantially as shown and described.
2. The book-holder consisting of the shelf, the wires connected to the endsthereot, and having the looped end bent, as stated, and the curved s'prings, socured at one end to the fender of said shelf, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination, with the screen having a longitudinal wire, of the book-holder, the curved springs connected to the shelf thereof, and the support-ing-wires connected to said sfielf, having their looped end bent to*occupy a vertical plane and the remaining portion inclined rearwardly, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix mysignature in presnce of two witnesses.
