Definitions
- the present invention relates to a device for cleaning magnetic filters. It has already been suggested to clean magnetic filters of ferromagnetic substances deposited on the magnetic parts of the filters by moving the magnets relative to the surrounding water at such a high speed that the magnetic deposits are torn off the magnetic parts of the filter. The torn off deposits can then by scavenging water be washed out from the magnetic filter. This method, however, has the drawback that considerable energy is required in order to rotate the rather heavy magnetic system at correspondingly high speeds.
- the known method is carried out in a device in which within a pressure body there is provided a permanent magnet system on a rotatable shaft which permanent magnet system is at a standstill during normal operation so that the magnetic impurities in the water can deposit or collect on the filter.
- a permanent magnet system on a rotatable shaft which permanent magnet system is at a standstill during normal operation so that the magnetic impurities in the water can deposit or collect on the filter.
- the device according to the present invention comprises a plurality of magnetic systems arranged one above the other in spaced relationship to each other while between the individual magnetic systems propellers or blades are rotatably arranged which for purposes of cleaning the magnetic system are rotated at relatively high speed so as to impart upon the surrounding water such a speed that the ferromagnetic substances deposited on the magnetic system will be torn off from the latter and can be withdrawn from the filter by scavenging fluid.
- the arrangement shown therein comprises a pressure resistant housing 1 having its lower portion provided with an intake 2 while its upper portion is provided with a discharge 3.
- a plurality of magnetic grates 4 are so arranged that for purposes of servicing the filter, they can be removed individually from the housing 1.
- propellers 5 are connected or keyed to a shaft 6 rotatably journaled in bearings 7, 8.
- Shaft 6 is through a coupling 9 drivingly connected to a transmission 10 which in its turn is drivingly connected to an electric motor 11.
- the bearing 8 is sealed toward the outside by a stuffing box seal 12.
- an inlet 13 for scavenging or rising water which is necessary for cleaning the magnetic grates 4.
- the water which is already in the housing 1 may be discharged through the discharge opening 14 and the discharge valve 15.
- the water to be cleaned flows from the bottom in upward direction through the pressure resistant housi n l as indicated by the arrows. Ferromagnetic parts or partlc es w
- the propellers 5 are normally at a standstill.
- the water supply is first shutoff and scavenging or cleaning water is admitted through the intake 2 while their propellers 5 are rotated by the motor 11 through the intervention of the transmission 10, the coupling 9 and the shaft 6. In this way the propellers create such a strong flow that the deposits are torn off from the magnetic grates and are washed out by the rinsing water.
- the blades of the propellers are expediently so designed that their angle of incident or pitch may be adjusted. It is furthermore advantageous to arrange the propellers in pairs and so to design the same that the propellers of each pair will run counter currently so that a strong turbulent flow will be produced. Moreover, the pitch angles of the individual propeller blades may be different. in this way, in addition to creating turbulence, a slow flow to the discharge will now be realized.
- the variation of the pitch angle of the propellers may be effected in any standard manner, at it is known, for instance, in connection with airplane propellers.
- a magnetic filtering device which includes longitudinally extending container means having fluid inlet and outlet means at oppositely located end portions of said container means, a plurality of magnetic grate means serially arranged in said container means and spaced from each other in the longitudinal direction of said container means, a plurality of rotary blade means interposed between said magnetic grate means, and means operatively connected to said blade means for selectively rotating the same to produce a strong fluid flow along the surfaces of said grate means.
- a device in which all of said rotary blade means are keyed to a common shaft extending in the longitudinal direction of said container means and substantially coaxial therewith.
- each two successive blade means are rotatable in counter current direction with regard to each other for creating turbulence.
