I. O. WILLIAMS.
GUPBOARD GATGH.
No. 362,805. Patented May 10, 1887.
INVENTOR 4/ ATToRNEYs I UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE,
ISAAC C. VILLAMS, OF AUBURN, VEST VIRGINIA.
CUPBOARD-CATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 362,805, dated May 10, 1887.
Application filed October 25, 1886. Serial No. 217,163. (No model.)
.To all whomI it may ooncern:
Be it known that I, IsAAo O. WILLIAMs, a citizen of the United States, a resident of Auburn, in the county of Ritchie and State of Vest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Ilnprovements in Oupboal'd- Catches; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters 01' figul'es of reference marked thel'eon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the dl'awings is a Vertical sectional view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a real' view of the face-plate with the real' wall of the chamber K' relnoved. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line x x, Fig. 2.
My invention l'elates to cupboard-catches; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the clailns.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the face-plate ot' the catch, which is provided in its corners with screw-lloles.through which the seclll'ing screws are passed into the door to hold the same in place. The face-plate A is also provided with a l e y-hole,B, and a slot, O, through which the neek or steln D of the sliding catch E projects. On its outer or projectingv end 'the stem D is provided with a knob by which to move the sliding catch.
The face-plate A is provided on its real' face, immediately in I'ear of the slot O, with a small rectangular chalnber, F, which is open in its rear, so that the real' portion, G, of the sliding catch E may project through to engage the keeper-plate H, which is secured to the lower face of the cupboardshelf for the pul'pose of keeping the cupboal'd-door closed when desired. The sliding catch is beveled at its innel' end on its upper face, and is provided with a transverse notch, I, in its upper side, which holds said catch E normally ill the latchingi position. The cross-pill J slides in its seats in the ends of the open chalnber F, the distance said cross pin tl'avels being limited by the length of the slot O in the face-plate.
At the side of the small chamber F a larger chamber or box, K', is constl'ucted, said chamber or box being recessed in the real' edges of its side walls to receive the ends of the bolt 1', which is provided in its upper edge with the wards for the key alld is provided in its back edge with a spring, N, which holds it nornlally in engagenlent with the seats in which it slides. The chamber K' is closed by a rear wall, which retains the bolt I' in its seats.
Vhen the bolt is not shot forward, the sliding catch operates as a simple catch; but whell the bolt has` been shot forward the catch is locked in position, and the device is converted illto a lock and holds the door closed.
Having described this invention, wllat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The combination, with the face-plate provided with the rectangnlar open ehambel' oll its rear face, of the notched sliding catch having the cross-pin passing through its shank, and the encircling spring arranged to press laterally upon the bolt, substantially as specified.
In testilnony whel'eof I affix nly signature in presence of two witnesses.
ISAAC C. XVILLAMS.
