SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 283,335, dated August 14, 1883.
Application tied october 11. ieee. (Model.)
To @Zt whom t may concern:
' Be it known that I, .Lines G. FRANKLIN, a citizen oi' the United States, and a resident of Lena, in the county of Umatilla and State of Oregon, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Hasp Locks 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this speciication, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a front view of my device, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view oi' the same. Y
This invention has relation to hasp-loeks for swinging and sliding doors; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafterY fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim. The invention has especial relation to hasplocks adapted to be applied to either swinging or sliding doors. p In the drawings a sliding door is delineated as illustrative of the object of the improved construction.
It has been heretofore difficult, in sliding doors especially, to compensate for shrinkage where the hasp and staple were fixed. To overcome this objection-I have made the hasp adjustable, and have hinged it, so that, in connection with the hook, staple, and keeper, it
' may be adj usted to compensate for any shrinkage that may take place.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, a designates the door-frame of a sliding door. b designates the sliding door, carrying the staple c, the pivoted engaging- `hook d, hand-piece e, connected thereto, and the pivoted keeper-f, having the catch-hook g, spring h, releasing-dog i, and key-post la. A bar, Z, is hinged to the door-frame o, as shown, and arms or studs mmrise from its forward end, and have threaded perforatons n, in which the threaded shank o of the slotted hasp p is adjusted at will to compensate for the shrinkage. A key, q, is employed to unlock the keeper when it is necessary to open the door; but in closing the parts the hook and catch engage automatically, as is obvious.
. By turning the threaded hasp in its bearp ings it may be forwarded or retracted'to suit the position of the staple in the door after shrinkage.
Having thus fully described my invention, what vI claim, is-- l In a hasp-lock, a hinged bar having perforated threaded studs or arms, in combination with a slotted hasp having athreaded shank engaging the threaded studs, substantially as speciiied.
In testimony that l claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence oi two witnesses.
JAMES C. FRANKLIN.
