Description

(ModeL) J. J. COLLINS.
CLOTHES WRINGER.
No. 362,359. Patented May 3, 1887 WITNESSES Now JNKDLw R,
UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSHUA J. COLLINS, or KNOX, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT AND MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, 'ro HIMSELF, JOHN S. coLLINs, AND WILLARD D. S. RODGERS, OF SAME PLACE.
CLOTHES-WRINGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 362,359, dated May 3, 1887.
Application filed July 31, 1885. Serial No. 173,166. (Model) clothing can be dried at one time without detriment to the same; and to this end the invention consists in the combination, with a proper receptacle, of a fixed roller at oneend,
a removable roller at the other end, an apron attached to said rollers, brackets for supporting the rollers one above the other, and mechanism for turning the fixed roller, all as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
For a better understanding of my invention, reference should be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a clotheswringer embodying my improvements, with parts broken away; Fig. 2, a plan view of the same, showing the apron as spread out or unfolded; and Fig. 3, adetail of one ofthe brackets for supporting the rollers.
Similar letters represent corresponding parts in the drawings.
A represents a box, preferably of rectangular form, supported by legs a a a a, passing through and secured to a table or bench, B, which extends beyond one endof the box A, upon which the wash-tub proper is placed. This box -A is open at one end and closed at the opposite end. Near the closed end and upon each side of this box is mounted and secured forked slatted brackets b b, which form bearings for the shaft and rollers, presently to be described.
The arms 0 c of the brackets b b project beyond the closed end of the box A, and form journals for a shaft, 0, said shaft being provided on one end with a crank, D, and pinion E, such pinion meshing with a larger pinion ends, which adapt it to fit within slots d d in the upper portion of the brackets 11 b, and also into notches e 6, out upon the upper edge of the box A. V
The operation of my device is as follows:
, The apron H is spread out with the roller I,
resting in the notches e e at the open end of the box A, as shown in Fig. 2. The clothing which has been washed is placed on the apron, and the latter is then folded by removing the roller I from its bearings and mounting it on the slats d d of the brackets b b. This arrangement brings the two rollers nearly together, as in the ordinary wringers, and by turning the crank D the apron, together with the clothing, are wound upon the roller G, and all water is thoroughly expelled from the garments under a pressure exerted by the near proximity of the two rollers 5 and by replacing the roller I in the notches e e the apron is again spread out or unfolded and the clothing removed therefrom.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
I11 a clotheswringer, the combination of a 'box, a fixed roller at one end, a removable roller at the other end, an apron attached to said rollers, a pair of brackets for supporting the rollers one above the other, and mechanism for turning the fixed roller, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSHUA J. COLLINS.
