IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,792, dated July 1l, 1876; application filed June 22, 1876.

To all whom it may concern: Beit known that I, Rosa HEILMANN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Washing-Machine, which invention is fully set forth in the following specification,Arelerence being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- L Figure l represents a transverse vertical section. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view.

Similar letters indicate corresponding parts. This invention relates to awashingmachine, in the tub of which is situated a brush mounted on a revolving shaftbver a platform, and combined with a treadle, so that by operating the treadle, and placing the clothes to be washed successively on the platform, they are exposed to the action of the brush. With the brush is combined an adjustable soap-holder, so that `the brush can be supplied with the requisite quantityv of soap. The treadle which imparts motion Yto the brush also imparts motion to the wringer-rollers. The bearings of the brush-carrying shaft are yielding, so that the brush can adjust itself to the varying thickness ofthe clothes passed through beneath it.

In the drawing, the letter A designates the tub of my washingmachine, which is made of wood or any other suitable material. In this tub is situated a platform, B, beneath a brush, O, which is mounted on a shaft, D, which has its bearings on one end in one of the walls of the tub, and on the other end in a bracket, E, extending from and secured to one of the sides of the tub. These bearings are in journal-boxes a, which move in slots b, and are subjected to the action of springs c, so that the shaft D can rise and fall, and the brush is free to adjust itself to the thickness of the clothes passing beneath it. One side of the tub A is partly or wholly inclined to give free access to the platform B and brush O.

On the outer end of the shaft Dis mounted a pulley, d, which connects, by a belt, e, with a pulley, f, which is mounted on a sha-ft, g, to which a revolving motion is imparted by a treadle, F, situated beneath the tub A.

On the shaft g is also mounted a pulley, h,

from which extends a belt, t', to a pulley, j, mounted on the end of an arbor, 7c, on which ils secured one of a pair of wringer rollers,

In practice the two rollers are geared together, and they are situated in a recess cut out of the rear side of the tub A, so that the clothes, after having been exposed ,to the action of the brush, can be readily introduced between the wringer-rollers for the purpose of expelling the water. The proportion between the pulleys f d and h j, respectively, is such that the brush receives a rapid motion, while the wringer-rollers move slowly'.

Instead of using a belt for transmitting motion from the treadleshaft to the wringerrollers, a chain or cog-wheels might be substituted.

With the brush O is combined a soap-hold'- er, G, which is lcomposed ot a clamp and arms hinged to the bracket E, so that a cake of soap secured in said clamp can be readily brought in contact with the revolving brush, ormoved away out of contact with the same.

` The brush O and its shaft may be so constructed that said brush can be removed and replaced by another, and that the nature of the brush can be changed according to the fabric on which the same has to act.

By this arrangement the operation of washing can be performed with great ease, the operator being seated in front of the tub A, in a convenient position to work the treadle and to reach into said tub, which is partly lled with water or soap-suds, and which contains the clothes to be washed.

One piece after the other is lifted on the platform B, and exposed to the action of the brush O, and when all the dirt. has been removed, said lpiece is rinsed out and passed through between the wringer-rollers ready for drying.

What I' claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, with a tub, A, of a platform, B, and brush C, mounted on a yielding shaft, D, which receives its motion by means of a tremlle, F, substantially as shown and described.

2. The combination, With the tub A, platform B, and brush C, ot' a soap-holder, b, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination, with the tub A, platform B, brush C, and treadle F, of wringerrollers l m, substantially as specified.
