IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,523, dated July 28, 1874 application filed June 8, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. BANZETT, of Brooklyn, in the county of Susquehanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Washing-Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical elevation, partly in section; Fig. 2, a plan view.

This invention relates to that class of washlllg-lIlEtOllll'lQS which'combine in one apparatus a washer and wringer.

It consists of a receptacle for the water having in its bottom a detachable false bottom made of ridged or grooved slats and made concave in shape, over which vibrates one or more rubbers attached to the ends of a pair of levers containing a wringer. Said receptacle is provided with a lid, which, in. connection with a pair of hinged leaves supported by brackets, forms an ironingboard when the wringer is folded within the machine.

D is the lid provided with a double set of hinges to allow it to be folded entirely out of the way and in avertical position when the washer is in use, and E are the legs upon which the machine is supported. In the bottom of the receptacle for water are the curved supports 1 having upon them the ridged or grooved pieces a, placed near each other for forming the concave bottom, said bottom being a few inches above the tight bottom to prevent contact between the clothes and the dirty deposits in the water, and made detachable so as to be readily taken out when necessary. G G are the ridged or grooved rubbers which move over the false bottom and agitate the clothes. Said rubbers are pivoted in slotted eyes I) of the arms 0 of levers H, and are moved by the handle attached to the said levers. Passing through both these levers, and revolving in journals in the sides of the machine, is a shaft to which is attached the roller 61, with cog-wheel d and a crank, 6, outside the machine, and meshing with this cog-wheel, and communicating with this roller, is another, f and f pivoted in adjustable blocks 0 controlled by the movable bar g, spring 9, and set-screw h. I is a handle passing through the arms of the wringer-screw, by means of which the rubbers are oscillated; and J is a set-screw for controlling the position of the wringer. v

The operation of this machine is as follows: For washing purposes the machine is provided with a sufficient amount of Water of the proper temperature, and sufficient amount of soap or other cleansing material, the clothes disposed upon the false bottom at a proper thickness, and the rubbers agitated by the handles I. As soon as thoroughly cleansed they are taken out, the false bottom removed, pure water substituted, clothes replaced, the rubbers agitated,

and the clothes are rinsed. They are then ready for wringing, which process simply invol ves the turning of the crank e and the passage of the clothes between the rollers.

The clothes are then allowed to dry, and when in a proper condition for ironing the wringer is folded in the machine, the lid closed, and the leaves B B elevated and supported by the brackets 0 O, and a convenient ironing-table constructed.

By means of this new and excellent arrangement an article of great domestic utility is secured-one which can be used in every stage of the laundry art, and one which is valuable alike for compactness and efficiency.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is 1. The combination of the rollers d and f, cogwheels d and f, bar 9, spring 9, set-screw h, and handle I with the oscillating arms 0, the said parts being arranged to fold within the wash-box A and be covered with a lid, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. The combination of the double-hinged lid D, single-hinged leaves B, the brackets O, and the wash-box A, for forming an ironing-table, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

3. The combination of the handles of the setscrew of a wringer with the lever-arms of the rubbers for the purpose of rocking the same,
