The object of my invention is to provide a simple and eflicient machine for washing clothes without the direct application of the hands to the articlesbeing washed and with out pounding or friction,
My invention consists in a revoluble cylinder mounted in movable bearings fitted to atub and in gearing for imparting rotary motion to the cylinder.
The upper part of the tub A is of oblong rectangular form, and the lower part consists of ahollow metallic semi-cylinder B. In the ends of the tub are formeddovetail grooves a a, in which are fitted the bars a c. In the lower ends of thesaid bars are formed the bearings of the journals d d of the cylinder 0. The cylinder 0 is formed of the heads e e and the slats f, secured to the edges of the heads, with narrow intervening spaces 9 between the slats. A door, D, is provided at one side of. the cylinder, which is connected with the heads 6 e by hinges h, and is provided with a hook, i, for holding it in a closed position.
To the journals d of the cylinder 0 is secured a spur-wheel, E, and to the bar 0 is secured a right-angled arm, F, in which is supported a pinion, G, on the shaft H, which projects through a slot, 2",in the end of the tub A, and is provided with a crank, I Upon the screwj, projecting, from the side of the bar a,
through the slot 2', and also upon the shaft H, is placed a clamping-bar, J,which rests against the end of the tub, and, in connection with the screw j, is employed for clamping the bar a in its place in the tub. The top of the tub is closed by a cover, K, which confines the heat, steam, and water to the tub. Legs L secured to opposite ends of the tub support it at a convenient height above the floor. able intervals longitudinal bars k are secured along the inner surface of the walls of the cylinder, and holes I are made in the ends of the cylinder, to permit of the circulation of water.
The clothes to be washed are introduced into the cylinder through the-door D, and the tub is partly filled with water, when motionis imparted to the cylinder '0 by the crank I through the shaft H, pinion G, and spurwheel E. As the cylinder (1 is revolved, the clothes are carried upward by the bars k and allowed to fall, thus continually agitating them and causing the water to circulate through them and remove the dirt.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secnreby Letters Patent- A Washing-machine comprising the tub A, having vertical recesses a a, a vertical slot, i, the two vertical bars 0 c; fittingin said recesses, the washing-drum journaled in the lower ends of thesaid bars, and havinga gear-wheel, E, the angle-arm Fabove the said gear, the shaft H, passing through slot 13, journaled in the bar a, and lower end of arm F, and having the gear G between said arms and meshing with the gear E, the vertical bar J, through which the shaft H passes, and the screw j, passed through the bar J into the upper'endof the bar 0 above the shaft H, substantially as set forth.
HIRAM LAWRENCE. W'itnesses:
GEORGE L. MEYER, LEVI LAWRENCE.
