Mautz AnorneyPetherbridge, ONeill & Lindgren ABSTRACT: The invention relates to a bobbin having means for securing the wire leading from the bobbin to prevent any strain being placed on the coil wound on the bobbin,
BOBBIN WITI-I LEAD STRAIN-RELIEVING DEVICE As is known, in the production of electrical coils the wire forming the coil is wound around a core or bobbin with the ends of the wire extending from the coil for subsequent connection to the associated electrical connections or terminals. Frequently, when the ends of the wire are handled, or manipulated, in connecting to the associated electrical terminals, the wires are pulled causing a strain to be placed on the coil.
Accordingly, it is a principal object of the invention to provide a bobbin having means for preventing or minimizing any strain on the coil as the coil wire ends are handled or connected to the associated circuitry.
The invention will be more fully understood from the following more particular description of preferred embodiments of the invention, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings:
FIG. 1 shows a plan view of the bobbin in accordance with the invention;
FIG. 2 shows a front view of the bobbin of FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 shows a side view of the bobbin of FIG. 1;
FIG. 4 shows a partial enlarged view of the bobbin of FIGS. 1-3, indicating by the dotted lines the positioning of the wire in the bobbin to prevent strain from being placed on the coil; and,
FIG. 5 shows a modification of the bobbin of FIGS. 1-4.
Referring now to the drawings, and first, particularly to FIGS. 1-4, the numeral 11 designates a bobbin of an electrical insulating material such as, for example, nylon, and having a pair of spaced projecting flanges 13 and 14 straddling an essentially hollow core or sleeve 15 upon which a wire is to be wound for forming an electrical coil or winding.
The flanges 13 and 14 include extending projections or ears 17 and 18, respectively; and, each ear is bifurcated or divided into two portions. For example, ear 18 is divided into two portions 19 and 21, separated by a slot 23 extending from the edge of the ear in toward the edge of the flange 14. In addition, the portions 19 and 21 include slots 25 and 27, respectively, extending from the top and bottom of the car 18 inwardly through a slightly restricted throat to form a pocket or recess for receiving a wire as will be explained hereinafter.
Referring now to FIG. 4, one end A of the wire 30 forming the coil 32 on bobbin 11 extends from the bobbin 11 for connection to the associated electronic circuitry. Wire 30 is arranged to lead from the coil 32 through the pocket 27 outwardly to the exterior side of ear 19 on flange 14, back through the slot 23 to the interior side of car 21, and outwardly through pocket 25 to the exterior side of ear 21. Thus, the end 30A of wire 30 winds in serpentine fashion through the pocket 27, slot 23 and pocket 25 to retain or restrain wire 30.
Accordingly, tensile forces applied to the wire 30 will be absorbed or reacted by the ears 19 and 21 and will not be transmitted to the portion of the wire forming the coil 32.
The other end of the wire 30, not shown, is retained or restrained in flange l7 similarly to the manner in which end 30A of wire 30 is retained or restrained in flange 18.
A modification of the inventive bobbin is shown in FIG. 5 wherein a bobbin 33 includes two spaced flanges 35 and 37 straddling a core 39. The flanges 35 and 37 are formed essentially in a closed U or shield shape with outstanding cars 41 and 43 being formed on the straight portion of the shield Each of the cars 41 and 43 has two pockets and a slot similar in construction to the ears l7 and 18 of the bobbin of FIGS. 14.
Note slot 23A and the pockets 25A and 27A similar respectively to slot 23 and pockets 25 and 27 in ear 18.
The ears 41 and 43 of the bobbin of FIG. 5 are similar in function and mode of utilization as are the ears of bobbin 11 shown in FIGS. 1-4.
While the invention has been particularly shown and described with reference to a preferred embodiment thereof, it will be understood by those skilled in the art that changes in form and details may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
