I M. B. McGASTLINE.-
CARPET PASTENER.
Patented May 3, 1887.
um/whoa UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MINNIE B. MCOASTLINE, OF SYRACUSE, NE\V YORK.
CARPET-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 362,171, dated May 3, 1887.
Serial No. 231,076. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MINNIE B. MoOAsTLINn, of Syracuse, county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in CarpetFasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a sectional elevation on the line of the tack. Fig. 2 is a like view on the line of the retaining-rod; Fig. 3, a like view of the base and fastening; Fig. 4, a view like Fig. 1, showing different base; Fig. 5, a view like Fig. 2, showing base of Fig. 4; Fig. 6, a view like Fig. 1, showing another base; Fig. 7, a like view of Fig. 6 on the line of the retainingrod; Fig. 8, a view of the base and its fastening shown in Fig. 7; Fig. 9, a sectional elevation showing another base; Fig. 10, a sectional elevation showing another base; Fig. 11, a sectional elevation showing another base and follower.
My invention relates to that class of carpetfasteners in which the carpet is secured by permanent tacks projecting above a base which is secured to the floor adjacent to the base-board; and it consists in the several novel features of construction and operation hereinafter described, and specifically set forth in the claims hereunto annexed.
It is constructed as follows:
A represents the base in all of the figures of the drawings, consisting of a'strip of wood or metal of one of the several forms shown, and which is secured to the floor by a nail or screw, 1, so that at least one face will lie against the base-board. In this base I secure the tacks or spurs 2, the points of which project outwardly from the base. At the proper points I also secure in the base the threaded rods 3, each of which is provided with a set or thumb screw of any desired form. I
B is my follower, consisting of a strip of wood or metal of one of the forms shown, perforated to receive the outer ends of the tacks, as shown, at any angle desired, and also to receive the rods 3 at any desired angle. These rods 3 are slotted or cross-bored to receive a key, 4:.
O is an ornamental cap-molding, of wood or metal, (meta1 is shown in the drawings,) perforated at intervals in its length to permit the rods 3 to pass through it. This cap consists of a front face, 5, a downward flange, 6, upon its back side, and an inward flange, 7, upon its front side. The flange 6 rests against the base-board, and the flange 7 rests upon the carpet.
In the several figures the dotted line 8 represents the carpet.
It operates as follows: Having provided the base with the tacks 2 and rods 3, l secure it to the floor. I then draw up the edge of the carpet and press it down upon the tacks. I then put on the follower over the rods 3 and press it down thereon until the points of the tacks enter or pass through it, and when down tight I insert the keys 5 through the rods 3, thus holding the follower in place. I then put on the cap 0 and screw down the thumbscrews.
It will be observed that I can use a perfo rated washer upon the rods 3 in place of the follower, or a follower in such case composed of short pieces.
\Vhat I claim as my invention; and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A carpet-fastener consisting of a base provided with projecting tacks, a follower fitting upon said tacks, a cap-piece, and retaining-rods passing through the base, the follower, and thecap, substantially as shown and described.
2. A carpet-fastener consisting of a base provided with projecting tacks and rods 3, a follower fitting over said tacks and rods and held in place by keys through said rods, and a cap-covering secured upon the rods 3, substantially as shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 25th day of February, 1886.
MINNIE B. MOCASTLINE.
In presence of O. W. SMITH, F. L. STEVENS.
