Description
\ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT J. KLETZKER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
- BOOK-COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,950, dated April 26, 1887. Application filed February 23, 1886. Serial No. 192,875. (No model.)
, an inside part, with space between them to 1c Figurel is a perspective View of an inside book withthe removable cover thereon. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the same with one leaf of the cover open. Fig. 3 is an inside perspective view of the cover. Fig. at is a per- 5 spective view of the inside book.
It is not a new thing to bind account-books with light covers and to inclose them in a removable cover when in use, the latter being removed when the acconntbook is full, or for other reason thrown out of constant use.
My improvement consists in the described construction of thecover and manner of bold ing it in place upon the inside book.
A is the inside book, the leaves B of whose 5 cover may be made light and without any ornamentation, as they will not be subjected to wear nor bein sightwheniu use. Theseleaves B have slots b for the passage of buttons 0 0 upon the cover 0 G. The buttons 0 each has 0 a single tongue, while button 0 is doubletongued.
In order that removable covers of the class to which my invention belongs may operate properly, it is necessary that they should be 5 permitted to slide to a limited extent upon the cover-leaves of the inside book in opening and closing the book. To this end the slots 1) are formed with their greater length in a direction transverse to the back of the book or parallel 40 with the plane in which the covers move in The leaves of the cover are made double,
each leaf consisting of an outside part, 0, and
receive the leaf B of the inside book. The inside part, 0, is shown divided into three strips, 0', c", and 0, extending lengthwise of the leaf. The strip 0 is open at both its long edges, but united with the outside 0 at bot-h ends. The strip 0 is united with the outside part, 0, at the outer edge and at both ends, and the strip 0 forms a flap hinged at one long edge to the inner edge of the strip 0 and not directly connected to the outside part, 0. When the strip 0 is folded down, as seen in Fig. 2, it fills the whole space between the strips c*and 0 The spring-buttons are attached to the part 0 by rivets D, upon which they turn as pivots. The heads (2 of the rivets may be made in form of bosses, upon which the book may rest, thus preserving the face of the outside part, 0, of the cover from wear.
In putting the cover upon the book A, the
leaves B are inserted between the parts 0 and G, and then the buttons 0 c are drawn through the slots 2) and turned across the slots, as seen in Fig. 2. Then the strips or flaps c are closed down. as shown in Fig. 2. Itwill now be seen that the face of the part G will be fiat, except for thepart of the strip cut out to have access to the button 0, and thus a smooth hearingwill be given to the leaves of the book which are next to the part 0.
I have described the inner part, 0, of the leaves of the supplementary or removable cover as consisting of three strips;-but this is not essential, for it may consist of one or more, the essential feature being the locking device, while the other novelties of the invention have value in their combination with this.
It has been stated that for the purpose of holding the two covers snugly together the buttons are formed of spring-steel plates; but it is obvious that so far as other features of the invention are concernedthis is not essential. For example, the slots arranged as described do not depend upon any peculiarity in the construction of the heads of the buttons in order to permit the two covers to slide upon each other.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with the book having cover-leaves provided with slots elongated in a direction transverse to the back of the book, of the outside cover having buttons adapted to pass through said slots and engage the coverleaves of the book, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A removable cover having spring-buttons to hold cover of an inside book.
3. The combination, with an inner book having cover-1eaves, of an outside removable cover having the strips 0 and c placed on the inside of the cover-leaves, as described, and having their ends secured to the ends of said coverleaves, the intermediate strip, a, hinged to the edge of one of the aforesaid strips, and buttons for securing the cover-leaves of the inner book and removable cover together, substantially as set forth.
4. The outside or supplemental cover having pockets to receive the cover-leaves of an ALBERT J. KLETZKER.
