PLUME.
No. 361,948 Patented Apr.- 26, 1887.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY D. JACKSON, OF MATTEAlVAN, NEW YORK.
PLUME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,948, dated April 26, 1887.
Application filed February 26, 1887. Serial No. 229,007. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY D. JACKSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Matteawan, in the county of Dutohess and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plumes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and
joint in the shank or standard of the plume and surrounding the same by'a coil-spring or equivalent means for stiffening the joint. The coil-spring is preferable in that it will permit a yielding of the joint at the end of each swaying movementof theplume and can bequickly applied and conveniently operated when it is desired to fold the plume.
The improvement consists in the novel features hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and shown in the annexed drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of a plume embodying my improvement. The dotted lines show the yielding motion at the end of the swaying movement in each direction; Fig. 2, a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the plume lowered or folded; and Fig. 3 is a front View embodying a modification.
The plume is of ordinary construction, and is composed of the tuft A and the standard made in two parts, B and B, hinged together, so that a portion of one part extends on each side of the plane of the other part when the plume is folded, and presents a purchase for the coil-spring O on each side of the pivotal connection between the two parts for holding the plume folded and from resting upon the animal. The coil-spring surrounds and extends on each side of the joint for stiffening it. One end may be fixed and the other end movable along the standard for freeing the joint and permitting the folding of the plume. The spring is compressed by grasping the movable end thereof between the fingers and moving it toward the fixed end till the joint is cleared, when the plume can be folded. The spring is then released, and, exerting an equal force on the fixed part B of the standard, on each side of the pivotal connection b, holds the plume in its lowered or folded position.
The standard-is generally provided with a shoulder at each end, and the coil-spring will be held between said shoulders. In this case both ends of the spring are movable, and either end may be compressed, as desired. In case the spring is stiff and small and does not afford a broad purchase for the fingers, the same can be had by the washer D, mounted upon the standard. The washer is provided with arms (Z, projecting in opposite directions therefrom, which offer a sure purchase for the fingers when compressing the spring. The lower end of the standard is provided with the socket E and set-screw e for clamping the plume to any suitable projection in the usual manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 151-- 1. A plume having a standard composed of two parts hinged together and a stiffener surrounding the joints and permitting a slight yielding of the latter, substantiallyas and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, with the plume having a standard composed of two parts hinged together, of the coil-spring for holding the plume upright and lowered, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the plume having a standard made of two parts hinged together and the compressible stiffener, of the bearingwasher located at one end of the stifi'ener and presenting a bearing-surface for the fingers to scribed. or folded, substantially as setforth. 1o
