MACHINE FOR PRESSING FABRICS.

EEPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,773, dated April 26, 1887. Application filed July 1, 1886. Serial No. 206,832. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE WV. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of \Voonsocket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island,'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Pressing Fabrics, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to that class of beds used in machines for pressing fabrics, and it consists in constructing the bed and the facing of thin metal, so that the latter can be applied to and removed from the bed longitudinally to avoid the necessity of removing the bed or unduly elevating the cylinder to effect such application and removal.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation showing the cylinder and oppositebeds of a cloth-pressing machine with the facings thereon and illustrating my improvement. Fig. 2 is a side view of part of the cylinder and beds, showing in section a part of the frame of the machine as constructed to carry out my invent-ion. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 1 2, Fig. 2, the, frame of the machine being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 4. is a transverse section of a bed and facing illustrating a modification.

In pressing-machines as usually constructed it is common to use beds, single or double, with thin metal facings or linings, which are secured to the faces of the beds, and which can only be removed by detaching the bed or'elevating the roller. This is not only inconvenient, but results in delays, and sometimes in improper adjustments of the linings and injury to the fabrics. objections, I secure the facing to the bed, so as to be longitudinally removable therefrom, and construct the frame to permit such removal without displacing the bed or elevating 'or moving the roller farther than is necessary to take the friction off of the facing.

The bed and facing may be constructed in different ways, so as to secure an attachment along the opposite edges of the facing, and yet permitlongitudinaldetachment. The side frame, 0, has an opening, 00, opposite the end of the bed A, of such shape as to permit the longitudinal insertion and withdrawal of the facing, and the latter is secured in place after adjustment by means of a single screw-bolt, e, or other suitable securing device.

The facing B of the upper bed, E, is shown in Fig. 1 as being held in position on the bed by edge flanges engaging with flanges of the bed. In Fig. 4 is shown a modification, in which the edge flanges of the facing extend laterally into grooves in the bed, the facing being secured against longitudinal movement by a screw-bolt, e.

I have shown only the parts of the pressing machine adjacent to the beds, as myinvention relates only to the latter and its facing, andis applicable to pressingmachines of various constructions.

Without limiting myself to the preciseconstruction and arrangement of parts shown,I claim- 1. The combination of a pressing'machine bed having edge bearings and a longitndi- -nallyremovable thin metal facing having edge I flanges engaging with said bearings to prevent the facing from being lifted fromthe bed, substantially as described.

2. A pressingmachine bed having edge flanges and a thin metallic facing conforming to the bed and extending over said flanges, and with edge flanges overlapping the flanges of the bed to hold the facing thereon, substantially as described.
