NED E. BARNES, OF HOUSTON, TEXAS, ASSGNOR OF FIETY-ONE ONEHUNDREDTHS T0 V7. G. TWYMAN, OF HOUSTON, TEXAS.
TIE-PLATE.
Application filed September 27, 1915.
To @ZZ vwhom t m 0.17/ concern Be it known that I, NED E. BARNES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Houston7 in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tie-Plates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in tie plates.
The object of the invention is to provide a plate of the character described, designed to be fastened upon the ties of a railway track to receive the rails and which will prevent said rails from wearing into the ties and from spreading or overturning.
YWith the above and other objects in view, the invention has particular relation to certain novel. features of construction, operation and arrangement of plates an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l shows a plan view of the plate, Fig. 2 shows an edge view thereof, Fig. 3 shows an end view thereof, Fig. et showns a side view of a rail held in position by the.
plate, and Fig. 5 shows an isometric view thereof.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein like numerals of refererenoe designate similar parts in each of the figures, the numeral 1 refers to the tie and the numeral 2 to the rail mounted thereon. The plate 3 is mounted upon the tie and forms ay seat which receives the rail. The underside of the plate has projecting teeth, et which engage with the tie and hold the plate in position while the rail is being placed thereon and spiked, as hereinafter explained. The edges of the plate project each way beyond the rail base and the outer edge is divided, one section being upturned and resting against the outer side of the rail web and couforn'iing to the contour of the outer side of the rail, forming the knuckle 5, which prevents the rails from spread-- ing or overturning. The plate is secured to the tie by two inner and one outer spike, (l and 7 of the ordinary form which g ss through orifices in the plate and into the tie umlorncath wd the enlarged heads of which 'engage over the edges of the spending rail, to hold said plate and position.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr.. 25, initie serial No. 52,814.
That I claim' is:
1. The combinationwith a railway rail of a tie, a plate supported upon the tie, suppprting the rail and projecting beyond each side of said rail, one of the outer edges of said plate being divided into sections, one of which sections is upturned and conforming in shape to the rail and resting against the outer side of the rail forming a brace for the base, web and ball thereof, and a plurality of spikes passing through4 one end of the plate and a securing means passino' through one section ofjthe other end thereof?, securing the plate and rail to the tie.
2. The combination with a railway rail of a` tie, a plate supported upon the tie, sup
porting the rail and projecting beyond eachv side of said rail, one of the outer edges of said plate being` divided into sections, one of which sections is upturned and conforming in shape to the rail and resting aga-inst the outer side of the rail forming a brace forh the base, web and ball thereof, and a plurality of spikes passing through one end of the plate and a securing mea-ns passing through one section of the other end thereof, securing the plate and rail to the tie, and a plurality of teeth integral with the plate adapted to bite into said tie.
3. rlhe combination with a railway rail of a tie, a` plate supported upon the tie supporting the rail and projecting beyond each side of said rail, one of the outer edges of said plate being bifurcated, one of which sections is upturned and vconforlning in shape to the rail and resting against the outer side of the rail forming a brace for the base, web and ball thereof, said plate having` a plurality of openings passing1 therethrough. a plurality of spines passing through the plate near the ends thereof securing said plate and rail to the tie and a plurality of teeth integral with the plate and projecting downwardly therefrom adapted to bite into the tie to prevent the same from moving relative to the tie.
In testimony whereof I have signed my naine to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
NED E. BARNES.
