Description
JOHN BERLIEN, OF Str. LOUISv MISSOURI.' amp-BRACE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application 'led October 23, 1906. l Serial No. 340,220.
Patented March 5, 1907. Y
-Be it .known that I, JOHN BERLIEN, a citi- .zen of the United States, and a resident of St.
Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new 5 and useful Improvements in Rail-Braces, of which the following is a specification.
i This invention relates to improvements in ga rail-brace, and consists in the, novel a'rrangement of a casting to be placed against Vro' a railway-rail tosupport the same.
In the drawings, Figure 1 isa perspective view of my complete invention shown In'posi tion against a rail. Fig. 2 is a central vertiycal-sectional viewlofthe saine. Figi 3 isa I 5 top plan view. Fig. 4 is a top plan View of a' section of the rail and ties, showin the manneri in which my -invention is app ied to the .ral Referring to the drawings in detail, I prozo yvide a casting'composed of a horizontal base` section 5, which is provided witha plurality of openings 6 and?, through which the ord]- vnary railway-s ikeis passed for supporting the device to t ie tie 8. '1
Formed integral with the bed-plate'area pair of upwardly-projecting arms 9, each be- 4Ing provided on its inner surface with a Strengthening-rib 10.` The erfds A 11 of thel arms!) are provided with 'a wel) 12, which-,is
3o arranged to come in Contact with the web 13 .of the rail. 'lhe upper end of the web 12and arms-9 are formed to closely contactwith t-he under surface of the`tread 14 of the rail. The under surface of the .web 12 and the arms 9 surface of the flange 15 of the rail. By t is construction of casting the rail is preventedl `3 5 areformed to. closely contact with the up er j A'wlth said and flange of thel rail '4 from tilting or rising from the tie, as the web portion 12 Willy prevent the tilting of the rail while the under surface of the arms prevent the rising.`
After the device has' been placed inposition against the rail, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the ordinary railwayfspikes 16 are driven through the openingsV 6 and-7 into the tie, 45 supporting-the brace thereon; At the same' time the spikes driven through the opening' 7` come in contact with the edges of the flange 15A ofv the rail," preventin the same from" moving laterally upon the aselate..
'In equipping a railway-trac with these4 rail-braces they are placed against the rail'in 'staggered position,- or, other words, one on v one on' the other, as shown In" one side and Fi 4. aving fully described my invention, what I claim is-' A device of the class described, comprising a b'aselate provided with spike-openings', upward yroJec'ting arms formed ase-plate, the ends of said arms connectedby a web, and a stren helling-rib whereby Said arms are-reinforced, said armsso arranged as to communicate with the we b i substantially as speei- V6 5 'In' testimony whereof I have signed 'my-Y name to this specification in subscribing witnesses. JOHN BERLIEN;
presence Vof two 'Witnes'sesi ALFRED A. Eroxs, CoLGA-TE SCUDDER.
