SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,491, dated April 19, 1887.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARK DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gaps, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in caps and the like; and it consists, essentially, in a cap havingaportion of its sides separated, elastic connections between the same, and overlapping flaps extend from the sides, whereby the cap will readily yield to fit any size of head, and the formation of an open space is prevented when the cap is placed on a large head.

The novel construction of my cap is more fully pointed out in the following specification and claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a cap embodying my invention. Fig.2 is a vertical section in the plane ac, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the cap. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of a portion of the cap in the plane y y, Fig. 2.

In the drawings the letter A designates the body of a cap constructed of any suitable material, and B is a sliding band arranged about the lower portion of the body A, and secured thereto at its rear by a web, a, Fig. 4, of thin material, in the usual manner. The ends of the said band B are connected with each other at the front of the cap by a web or insertion, 11, Figs. 1 and 2, made of an elastic material-such as rubber webbing-so that when the rear end of the band is drawn down to cover the ears said web or insertion 6 yields and the band B fits neatly to the head.

The sides of the cap-body A are separated along a portion thereof, and are provided with flaps O D, which extend outward from a common point, as c, and overlap each other. Said A cap constructed in the manner above de-.

scribed will readily yield and adapt itself to various sizes of heads, and, as the flaps O D overlap, the formation of an open space when the cap is worn by a person having a large head is avoided. Such an open space would be the result if the sides were merely slotted and connected with each other by an elastic band.

My improvement can be used for caps other in construction than that shown in the drawings, and therefore I do not wish to confine myself to the special construction therein shown.

What Ielaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A cap having partly-separated sides provided with elastic connections and with overlapping flaps extending from the sides exterior to and over said elastic connections, substantially as described.

2. A cap having a portion of its sides sepa rated, elastic connections between the same, and overlapping flaps extending from the sides, in combination with a sliding band having its ends connected by an elastic web or insertion, substantially as shown and described.
