DEVICE FOR 'I'APPI NG MAINS.
Patented Apr. 12, 1887.
,7 A J-NVENTOR y W3 U ELLER UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HIERONYMUS MUELLER, OF DECATUR, ILLINOIS.
DEVICE FOR TAPPING MAINS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,021, dated April 12, 1887.
Application filed January 12, 1887. 1 Serial No. I24.l26. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
I construction and combinations of parts, as
hereinafter set forth and claimed, whereby a cheap, accurate, and easily-operated tapping device may be produced.
In the drawings accompanying and forming a part of thisspecifieation, Figure l is a side elevation of my device ready for operation. Fig. 2 represents the clamp-frame in side elevation. Fig. 3 represents the detachable jaw of the clamp frame. Fig. 4 represents a ratchet-wrench. Fig. 5 represents a tappingtool. Fig. 6 represents a guide-bushing in central vertical section. Fig. 7 is a view of the upper surface of the detachable jaw; and Fig. 8 is a section of the clamp-bar on dotted line 00, Fig. 2, showing the conformation of the rigid jaw, as seen from above.
a is the clamp-bar having rigid jaw a and rigid head a, both at approximately right angles with the bar and extended in the same direction.
a are recesses in the lower outer surface. of the rigid jaw.
b.arelaterallyprojecting pins arranged in pairs at different altitudes, the individuals of each pair being directly opposed.
a is the detachable jaw, having recesses c in its upper extended surface.
d is a clamp-screw used to adjust the relative position of the clamp-jaws.
e is a block provided with trunnions f, on which jaw c freely pivots.
e isa block provided with trunnions f, that engage the recesses a of jaw a.
g is a feed-screw for the tapping-tool.
h is a tapping-tool of any suitable construction.
iis a tool-guide having adjustment longi-' tudinally on bar a.
k is a setscrew, by means of which the pom is a set screw for retaining bushing Z in position.
n is a ratchet-wrench, which may be of any desirable construction, provided its tool-receiving recess conforms in shape and size to the top of the tool.
0 in Fig. 1 indicates by dotted lines the position of a groove in the interior surface of the sliding tool-guide Z, both sides of said guide being provided with such grooves of a size to pass over pins 1). V
The jaws a and c are bifurcated, as shown in Figs. 7 and 8, and are deflected in opposite directions, forming obtuse angles with ver-' texes on a line with the tapping-tool and the feed-screw.
The drill-shafts may be either of the inner or outer diameter of ferrule Z, the smaller size to be used when the bushing is in the head, thelarger size to be used when the bushing is removed, and the'arrangement making it pos sible to vary the shaft to approximately conform to variation in the diameter of the tap.
The block 6 rotates loosely on a plane surface of screw (2, and block e is threaded to correspond to the screw-threads.
To attach my device to a main, the jaw a is passed under the same and held in contact therewith, block e is turned upward or downward on the screw to approximately conform to the diameter of the main, the recessed end 0 of jaw c is placed under suitable pins, b, the trunnions of block 6 are placed in recesses a of jaw a, and the position of the device on the main is made secure by tightening screw d. The inclination of the jaws carries the center of the device on a line with the center of the main. The bifurcate conformation makes the attachment stable and permits the free operation of the tapping-tool, and the further preparatory adjustment and the operation consist of raising guide 1', placing a tool therein, lowering the guide and tool to a suitable extent, (the grooves 0 permitting unrestricted motion in this direction,) placing the ratchetwrench on the tool, centering the point of the feed-screw in the top of the tool, and proceeding in the customary manner by oscillating the ratchet-handle and rotating the feed-screw.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. A device for tapping mains, consisting in the combination of the clamp-bar having an upper head and a lower rigidjaw, the detachable jaw adapted to be connected at one end with the clamp-bar and at the other end with the rigid jaw, and having adjustment with relation to the said rigid jaw, the sliding guide on the clamp-bar, and the feed-screw in the head, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A device for tapping mains, consisting in the combination of the C11l11p*baI, the head on the upper end of the bar, the jaw on the lower end of the bar forming an obtuse angle with its vertex depressed, the detachable jaw having adjustment with relation to the rigid jaw and forming an obtuse angle with its vertex elevated, the sliding guide on the bar, and the feedserew in the head, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A device for tapping mains, consisting in the combination of the clamp-bar, the head on the upper end of the bar, the bifureate jaw on the lower end of the bar forming an obtuse angle with the vertex depressed, the detachable bifureate jaw having adjustment with relation to the rigid jaw and forming an obtuse angle with its vertex elevated, the sliding guide on thebar, and the feed-screw in the head, as and for the purpose set forth.
4. A device for tapping mains, consisting in the combination of the clamp-bar, the head, the rigid jaw, the detachable jaw, the compressing-screw, the block pivoting loosely on the upper end of the screw and provided with trunnions that furnish bearings for the detachable j aw,the threaded block on the screw, provided with trnnnions that engage the extended endof the rigid jaw, the guide on the bar, and the feed-screw in the head, as and for the purpose set forth.
5. A device for tapping mains, consisting in the combination of the clamp-bar, the head, the removable bushing in the head, the rigid jaw, the detachable jaw, the compressingscrew, the block pivoting loosely on the upper end of the screw, and provided with trunnions that furnish bearings for the detachable jaw, the threaded block on the screw provided with trunnions that engage the extended end of the rigid jaw, the guide on the bar, and the feedscrew in the head, as and for the purpose set forth.
