I I a, J 455cm e N PETERS. rnwuim nwr, wmm ac UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE J. HURD THOMPSON AND ORVILLE H. CURTIS, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINN.
FASTENER FOR RUBBER BOOTS OR SHOES.
EiPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 360,491, dated April 5, 1887. Application tiled September 13, 1886. Serial No. 213,396. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J. HURD THOMPSON and ORVILLE H. GURTIs, citizens of theUnited States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for Rubber Boots or Shoes; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of our invention is, mainly, an improvement in rubber boots and shoes, and more particularly of such as are designed for J use by lumbermen and others in snow.
.The improvements are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents our improved rubber boot; Fig. 2, a top View of a shoe provided with our improved fastening, and Fig. 3 a detached view of the fastening.
A in the drawings represents the upper and counter, made of a continuous piece of rubber cloth in the usual manner, and B the sole,
U cemented to the upper and counter in the usual manner.
0 is a flexible boot leg or top, stitched or cemented to the upper and of any desirable length. Rubber cloth or other suitable waterproof material of a flexible nature may be used for the bootleg, and it may be open at the side, so that it can be overlapped to fit closely to the leg of the wearer; or it may be closed with a seam and folded close to the leg.
d is a strap extending from side to side of the foot, and preferably passed between the upper and sole at the shank b, and cemented to make a water-tight joint.
6 is a strap extending from the side of the foot around the counter or heel. Preferably it is made to pass over the line of union of the counter and sole or heel, and is cemented to both, thus aiding in holding the sole or heel and counter together. The ends of both the straps d and e are secured to rings f, at the sides of the foot a little below and in the rear of the instep.
g is a string passed through the rings f for tightening and fastening the straps and for winding around the boot leg or top and holding it up to its place on the leg of' the wearer.
In Fig. 2 the straps d and e,with their rings and strings, are shown applied to a rubber shoe in the manner above described.
The combined action of the strapsthe one being passed under the instep and the other around the heel or counterand the string passed through the rings and over the instep holds the heel of the boot or shoe in place against the heel of the wearer.
\Vhat we claim is- A fastener for a rubber boot or shoe, comprising a strap extending from side to side and cemented to the shanlga strap extending from side to side around the heel and cemented thereto and to the sole at their line of union, and rings connecting said straps at the side of the boot or shoe, substantially as set forth.
