UNITED STATES I PATENT OFFICE.
HERVEY Z. KIMBALL, BROOKLYN, NEXV YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONEl-IALF TO LORENZO F. TIOE, OF SAME PLACE.
NUMBER OR LETTER PLATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 360,388, dated March 29, 1887.
Application filed Deccmbcrilfi), 1886. Serial No 922,918.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HERVEY Z. KIMBALL, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Im proved Number or Letter llatc, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved number or letter plate which is simple and durable in construction, and can be easily and securely attached to doors, 850.
The invention consists of one, two, or more plates having an inscription on their fronts 1 and a dovetailed groove at their backs, and of a dovetailed bar fitting into the said (love tailed groove and secured to the door by suit able means.
The invention also consists of various parts and details, and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front view of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a cross section of the same on the line a; 00 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line y y of Fig.
1, and Fig. 4: is a vertical crosssection of a modified form of the same.
The number or letter plate A consists of one or more plates, B, provided on their fronts with numerals or letters, and of the dovetailed bar 0, fitting into a corresponding groove, D, formed on the back of each plate B, which may be either solid, as shown in Fig. 4, or box-shaped, with an open back, as shown in 0 Figs. 1, 2, and 3.
One or more plates B are held on the bar 0 by passing the latter into the dovetailed grooves D, and the bar 0 projects sufficiently from the outside edges of the end plates to 5 permit of securing the plate to the door by screws E, or other means.
A washer, F, is
(No model.)
preferably placed between the screwhead and the bar 0, and part of the edge of the washer fits snugly against the edge of the plate, so that the plates are held securely in position and cannot move sidewise. The head of the screw F can'perform the same function as the washer, if desired. 7
The bar 0 is made of varying lengths,to suit the number of plates B to be united to form the required number or name.
The object of making box-plates, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, is to decrease the weight of the plate and to save material. Two or more letters or numerals-may be made in the front of one plate 13.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a number or letter plate for doors, 55 the combination, with a plate or plates provided with an inscription in front and having a groove in the back, ,of' a bar fitting in the said groove on the plates to hold the latter in position on the said bar, which projects beyond the outer edges of the end plates, screws for fastening the said projecting ends of the bar to the door, and washers held on the said bar by the said screws and serving to prevent a sidewise movement of the said plates, substantially as described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a number or letter plate for doors, consisting of a plate or plates indicating in front the number of the house or name of occupant of the house, a bar fitting into a groove formed on the back 1 of the said plates to hold them in position 011 the bar, which projects beyond the outer edges of the end plates, and screws passing through apertures in the said outer ends of the bar to secure the bar and its plates on the door, substantially as described.
