B. BUCHHOLZ.
1, AUTOMATIC BUCKLE OR FASTENING DEVICE. No. 360,369. Patented Mar. 29, 1-887.
WITNESSES IJV V'E-N'TOR Attorney N. PEYERS. Photo-Ulhognphzr. Washington. DV (1 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD BUGHHOLZ, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO MARK ELKIN, OF SAME PLACE.
AUTOMATIC BUCKLE OR FASTENING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 360,369, dated March 29, 1887.
Application filed November 4, 1886. Serial No. 217,968.
To (LZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD BUcHHoLz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of 7 Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Buckles or Fastening Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain new and usef ul improvements in automatic buckles or fastening devices; and it consists substantially in the same as constructed and in such other features as will hereinafter be more particularly described, and pointed out in the claim.
The invention comprises in its structure a case within which there is a sliding wedge for binding upon the strap, band, or other device to which it may be attached, and thus hold the same; and the object of the invention is to reduce the cost of manufacture of the device as compared with many formerinventions of this character, and which is accomplished by forming the case or box in two parts, and afterward uniting them together in any suitable manner, preferably by solder, each part being stamped out of sheet metal and struck up or shaped by suitable dies employed for the purpose.
There have been former inventions of this character, wherein a wedge is employed within a case for binding upon the strap or other device to which it is to be attached; but in such former instances they are of such form of construction as to render the cost of manufacture incompatible with what is realized from the article when placed on the marked; hence the above objects.
Referring to the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of both the top and bottom of the case; and Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal sectional View thereof, as when applied to the strap, band, or other article on which it is used. Figs. 3 and 4 indicate the form of the blanks before being struck up or shaped.
Reference being had to the several parts by (No model.)
the letters marked thereon, A represents the top or cover of the case, having therein an oblong slot, a, and B represents the base, the two, when united, inclosing a sliding wedge, D, having a roughened or serrated under surface and provided with a stud which works in the slot a. In securing a belt or band, to which the article is attached, the free end thereof is inserted through the boX beneath the wedge and the latter then forced backward within the space it occupies, it being evident that its roughened surface will bite or take into the material of which the strap or band may be composed.
As shown, the base or bottom 13 consists of a simple flat piece having in its opposite side edges the notches l 2 and 3 4, which are for the receptionof projecting prongs or legs 5, 6, 7, and 8, formed with the top or cover A, the said base or bottom being made to fit snugly between the two side flanges of the top or cover, and the two parts secured together by solder or otherwise.
In attaching this device to the belt or other article on which it is employed, the prongs 'are simply punched through the material, as
shown in Fig. 2. and then bent inwardly, as represented by dotted lines of the said figure.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In an automatic buckle or fastening device of the character described, the combination of the part A, having slot a, and formed with the side flanges and'depending prongs for attachment to a band or equivalent article, and the part B, united to said part A by solder or otherwise, the two parts inclosing between them a sliding wedge having a stud working in the slot a, as shown, and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereofI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDVARD BUOH HOLZ.
