SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 360,328, dated March 29, 1887.

To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN AARON SCHARLIN, of Santa Barbara, county of Santa Barbara, and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Extinguishers; and I do hereby declare the fol lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in lamp-extinguishers; and it consists in the combination of the wick-tube provided with pins, the extinguishing-cap which is pivoted upon the Wick-tube, the operating-lever which is pivoted near its outer end to the burner, and a connecting rod which is pivoted at its lower end to the inner end of the operatinglever and its upper end loosely connected to the extinguishing-cap, all of which will be more fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to provide a device for extinguishing-lamps which is effective in its operation, simple in its construction, and which can be attached to any ordinary lamp provided with a flat wick.
The accompanying drawing represents a device embodying my invention, the burner being shown in dotted lines.
The wick-tube A is provided with pins or projections B, which form pivots for the extingnishing-cap C. Loosely secured to the side of the extinguishing-cap is the connecting-rod D, which has its lower end pivoted to the inner end of the operatinglcver E. The operating-lever E is pivoted near its outer end to the outside edge of the burner, and extends outward sut'ticiently far to be readily operated. The cap 0 is formed of one piece of metal, which is bent downward, as shown, at each end, and pivoted to the wick-tube and extending across over the wick when operated by the operating-lever. By pushing downward upon the outer end of the operatingdever E, the inner end forces the connecting-rod D upward, and the connecting-rod D, having its upper end connected to the extinguishing-cap, turns the extinguishing cap upon its pivot and throws it over the wick, as shown in dotted lines, and causes the flame to be extinguished. The perforated plate which covers the top of the burner is provided with a slot, through which the connecting-rod D passes.
