Description

ILP-IKE @L u. B. RA'HAM ishers.
Lamp-Extingu Patented September 2,1873.
.l rrrrnn STATES PATENT @Ferca IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-EXTINGU-ISHERS.
Specification' forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,508, dated September 2, 1873; application filed February 8, 187 3.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, DAVID PIKE and Oris B. GRAHAM, of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Lainp-Extin guishers; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of ,the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specilication, and to the letters and figures of reference markedthereon.
Figure l o. the drawings is a representation of a sectional View of our lamp-extinguisher. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same.
Uur invention relates to certain improvements in lamp-extinguishers which may be readily applied to any of the well-known keroeene-lamp burners in common use; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, whereby the extinguishermay be-operated without regard to the height of the wick above the top of the wick-tube; and, also, in the arrangement of a device for holding the extinguisher in position either open or closed, as hereinafter particularly described.
In the drawing, A represents the wick-tube of an ordinary kerosene-lamp burner, on one4 side of which is secured a plate, B, which is of equal width with the tube, and extends upward a short vdistance above its top and inelines outward, so as not to interfere with the fia-me. C is a cap, which is cut from sheet metal and stamped in such form that, when in position against the upper end of the plate or wheel, e, for turning it. F is a stop, consisting of a plate bent at a right angle, and one of its sides attached to the tube, so that the other side will bear against the rod E just above the journal, acting asa spring to hold the extinguisher in position, either closed over the tube or thrown back out of the way. It' desired, the cap and rod may be made in one piece, cnt from sheet metal, and the stem and shaft rounded and finished by filing. I prefer, however, to make the shaft and stem of wire, with the upperend slightly flattened by hammering. I then cut the cap from sheet metal, with a tongue or strip, c, extending down from its rear portion, and having a lug formed on each side, which lugs are turned over and punched down on the flattened upper end of the rod E, and thereby securely fastened thereto. When made in this manner, Y
the rod E may be first fitted in place and the cap C attached .afterward 5 and in case of breakage the parts can be replaced with less trouble and at less expense than when made in one piece.
In using this extinguisher it is not necessary to turn down the wick, as the cap() extends a suflicient distance above the top of the tube to extinguish the tlame without interfering with the wick.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. Theplate B, in combination with the cap C, substantially as shown and described.
2. The stop F, in combination with the rod E, arranged and operating substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
DAVID PIKE.
