lJNrTnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK KIRKPATRICK, OF GREENVILLE, MISSOURI.
CLEVIS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 360,023, dated March. 29, 1887,
Application filed August 5, 1886.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK IIRKPATRICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenville, in the county of \Vayne and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Clevises; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to clevises for agricultural implements; and it consists in the details of construction shown, and in the novel features hereinafter more particularly referred to and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a beam provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a top view of the front portion ofthe beam having the elevis, a portion of which is broken away. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the easting, which is fixedly attached to the beam. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the staybar or adjustable arm for the casting. Fig. 5 is a modified form of the yoke and its connections.
The beam A of an ordinary agricultural implement is shown simply to illustrate the application of my invention. A casting, B, having a rear-arm extension, I), to engage the upper or lower side of the beam, is secured thereto by a bolt, G,passing vertically through the arm and the beam. The inner vertical edge of the casting B hasa series of transverse openings, 0. A stay-bar, D, having a bifurcated end,d, is secured to the beam by the bolt 0. This bifurcated end embraces the inner edge of the casting, and is transversely apertured to correspond with one of the openings 0, through which a bolt, E, passes and secures the parts. As the distance between the arm b of the casting and its adjustable arm or staybar D may be varied, it is evident that the elevis-easting B may be adjusted to beams of varying thicknesses. The forward end of the casting is secured to correspond with the arc of a circle, and is provided witha curved slot.
f, within which works a roller, F, journaled between the ends of a draft-loop, G, having a series of perforations, g, in its forward end for Serial No. 210,116. (No model.)
the lateral adjustment of the draft. A bellcrank or segment, H, is provided on each side of the beam. A bolt, h, passes through and unites the lower ends of the bell-cranks. The bolt passes through the ends of the draft-loop and forms the support for the roller F, which may be keyed or loosely mounted thereon. A yoke, I, unites the upper ends of the bellcranks, and a rod, 45, connects the yoke to a lever, J,pivoted near the rear end of the beam, preferably on the handle a. This lever is pro vided with the usual hand-operated latch, j, which engages with the toothed segment K.
It will be noticed that the roller F is toothed to engage corresponding teeth, f, on the inner front wall of the curved slot f, which causes a positive rotation of the roller in the operation of the bell-cranks. The roller and the front wall of the slot may be smooth, asindicated in dotted lines; but the teeth are preferred, as it gives better results. The draft is applied directly to the loop G,and through the bolt h and roller F to the casting B and a beam, A. The bell-crank levers or segments are not designed to receive any of the draft.
In practice,by operating thelever J the bellcrank levers will be turnedabout their pivotal connection h with the beam, and carry the draft-loop up or down, according to the direction of movement of the lever J and bellcranks. \Vhen the desired adjustment of the draft-loop is obtained, it may be fixed by the engagement of theleverandsegmcntby means of the locking-latch j.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. The combination of the casting provided with a vertical slot having its inner front wall toothed, aeorrespondi ugly-toothed roller working in the slot,a draft-loop connected with said roller, and means for adjusting the draft-loop, substantially as and for thepurpose set forth.
2. The combination of the beam, the vertically-slotted casting, a roller working in the slot, a draft-loop, a bolt uniting the free ends of the draft-loop and forming a support for the roller, apair of bcll-crank levers pivoted one on each side of the beam and connected with the draft loop and roller by the bolt passing through their lower ends, a yoke uniting the upper ends of the bell-cranks, a latch-lever ICO and segment, and a rod connecting the yoke I unite the parts, substantially as andfor the I) and lever, substantially as and for the purpurposes set forth.
poses set forth. In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature in 3.1 The casting B, having;1 a rearWardly-expresence of two witnesses. ten in arm and )rovide with a series of 5 openin gs on its inn er vertical edge, in (zombi FRANK KIRKPATRICK nation with a. stay-barhavingabifurcated end Vitnesses: transversely aper'tured to correspond with any J. E. MATTHEWS, of the openings in the casting, and a bolt to ABE. XVOODYARD/ 1
