J. H. STEVENSON.
HEADING FOR WINDOW SHADES.
No 859,905. Patented Mar. 22, 1887.

UNiTED STATES a'rnn'r @rrrrjn.
JAMES H. STEVENSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS. I
HEADING FOR WlNDOW-SHADES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 359,905, dated March 22, 1887.
Application filed February 11. 1887.
To alZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. STEVENSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of 1llinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvernentin Headings forWindow-Shades; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My improvement relates to an article of manufacture to be secured to the lower edges of window-shades and afford a receptacle for the weight bar or stick with which such shades are commonly provided.
It is the common practice to turn up and sew upon itself the material forming a window-shade to produce the receptacle to contain the weight bar or stick. This manner of construction is attended with various objections, principal among which is the weakening effect upon the material produced at the line of the stitches, whereby, owing to the fre quent handling of the shade at thelower edge, particularly to lower it, it gives at the ends of the line of stitches.
It is my object to provide a heading of particular construction for application to the lower edge of a window-shade, whereby particularly the objection above set forth shall be overcome and the material forming the shade strengthened or re-enforccd toward its lower edge rather than weakened; and it is further my object to produce a new article of usefulness in its purpose.
To this end my invention consists in a new article of manufacture comprising a heading for window shades, formed of two layers of fabric secured flatwise together toward their longitudinal edges to produce a longitudinal opening,at'fording a receptacle for the weightbar, and a flap above the opening at which to secure the heading to the edge of the shade.
My invention further consists in certain details of construction and combinations of parts, all as hereinafter more fully set forth.
lathe drawings, Figure 1 shows a piece of my Serial No. 227,293. (No model.)
improved heading in front elevation, and Fig. 2 is atransvcrse section of the same, taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
A. is the fabric, formed in two layers, 0* and r, secured together toward their edges, as shown at wand y, to produce the opening q, to receive a weightbar of the kind usually provided on window-shades, and preferably two flaps, p, above the opening q, to embrace the lower edge of the shade to which it shall be applied, and-secured by stitching through the flaps the interposed fabric of the shade. One flap may answer the purpose, though two are more desirable. The lower edge of the heading is provided with fringe 0 and tassels n.
I prefer to form my improved article entire in the weaving, as shown, since thereby it is more desirable than it formed of separatela-yers 1' r, fringe, and tassels, allscoured together by sewing.
The heading of my improved construction is designed particularly for use on the shades of the windows of railway cars, though of course it is not limited to such particnlarapplication.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As a new article of manufacture, a head ing for window-shades, comprising two layers of fabric secn red tlatwise together toward their longitudinal edges, and having a longitudinal opening, q, and a flap, 1), above the opening, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, aheading for window-shades, comprising two layers of fabric, 0' and 'r, woven flatwise together toward their longitudinal edges, and having a longitudinal opening, q, flapsp above its open ing, and fringe 0 at the edge below the open ing, the layers, flaps, and fringe beingintcgral,
substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
JAMES H. STEVENSON. In presence of G. McDonouen, J. XV. DYRENFORTH.
