Description

No. 723.282, PATENTED MAR. 24, 1903. J. J. JESSEN & J. H. ROSS. BAG.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 13, 1902.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JES J. JESSEN AND JAMES H. BOSS, OF OMAHA, NEBRASKA.
BAG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 723,282, dated March 24, 1903.
Application filed March 13, 1902- Serial No. 98,093. (No model.)
and State of Nebraska, have invented certain.
new and useful Improvements in Bags; and
we do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in bags, and particularly bags which are used for containingmoney, such as those em-.
ployed by banks, express companies, and the like.
The invention has for its object the production of a bag with a seam whichfcannot be worked loose, thereby allowing some of the contents of the bag to be extracted without breaking the seal at the mouth of the bag.
It has for a further object the provision of a bag with a seam, having the above qualities, but which shall not be too bulky or use an unnecessary amount of cloth and will be capable of being manufactured in a simple and inexpensive manner.
It consists ina bag having its edges brought together and stitched with a safety-seam, after which the stitched edges are folded back upon the bagand the new edges thus formed are again stitched, thus doubly securing the in accordancewith the present invention, the
first seam only in securing the edges thereof together havingabeen taken. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the same, the second seam joining the edges of the bag having been taken. Fig. 3 represents a sectional view through the bag on the plane of line 3 3, Fig. 2. y The bag claimed in this application is preferably formed of a single piece of cloth 1,
folded upon itself and arranged so that the selvage edge of the goods mayform the upsubstantially as described. 5
per or mouth edge of the bag, and the side and bottom edges of the bag are folded in the same direction, so as to bring the cut edges together, and a single seam 2 is first run around said edges, as indicated in Fig. 1. The stitched edges of the bag are then folded back upon the body portion of the bag, and a second seam 3 is run around the edges of the bag between the first seam and the double edge of the material. The joined edges of the material forming the bag will thus be seen to be doubly protected, and if anything occurs to one scam the other will'still prevent any chance of coins or other articles within the bag passing out at such a place. The drawings necessarily show the same in a somewhatbulky form, since in order to illustrate the'invention the cloth has to be given considerable thickness. In use, however, the same will not be found to be exceedingly bulky and is admirably adapted for the desired purpose. It will be observed that the first seam 2 is passed through four thicknesses of the material, and the second seam will then be passed through four thicknesses of the material except at the corners of the bag, where it will pass through eight thicknesses of said bag.
The bag above described will be seen to be simple in construction, and yet the edges which have been joined by the seams, as set articles can be extracted from the bag,a closed or covered seam being produced by the folding together of the edges of the material in the same direction, as described, whereby said material must be cut awaybefore the stitches can be approached between the edges.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. A bag comprising a suitable piece of folded material havingits edges applied together and folded in the same direction, a seam passed through the four thicknesses of the material-of the folded portion, a second fold being made in the edges and a second seam passed through the four thicknesses of material of the second fold outside the first fold,
2. A bag comprising a suitable piece of ma- 1 in the same direction, a safety-seam through terial folded upon itself with its edges in the the fold of the said edges, a second fold in same direction having an inner safety-seam the edges of said material, and a second seam l5 stitched around the meeting edges thereof, a securing said fold, substantially as described. second fold being formed in said edges, and In testimony whereof we hereunto affix our a second seam passed through the second fold signatures in presence of two witnesses. between the inner edge and the outer double portion of the bag, substantially as described. -IE% E 3 3. A bag comprisinga piece of suitable ma- 7 1 terial folded and having its selvage edge forming the mouth of the bag, the out edges of the material being applied together and folded Witnesses:
