(No Model.) A. SMITH.
HOLDBAGK IRON FOR WAGON TONGUES.
N0.'359,367. Patented Mar. 15, 1887.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUSTUS SMITH, OF LAURIN, MONTANA TERRITORY.
HOLDBACK-IRON FOR WAGON-TONGUES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 359,367, dated March 15, 1887.
Application filed November 2, 1886. Serial No. 217,801. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS SMITH, of Lanrin, in the county of Madison, Territory of Montana, have invented a new and Improved Holdback-Iron for Wagon-Tongues, of which the following is aspecification, reference being had to the-annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the end of a wagon-tongue to which my improvement has been applied, and Fig. 2 is an inverted plan View.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts inboth views. 4
The object of my invention is to provide a holdback for the ends of wagon-tongnes,whicl1' will prevent the neck-yoke from escaping from the'tongue in case of accident to the harness. My invention consists in the*construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
To the tongue A, near its free extremity, in
. the under surface thereof, is secured a holdback-iron, B, formed of the block a, projecting downwardly at right angles from the tongue A, and the brace b, extending rearwardly from the block a and secured to the under surface of the tongue. In the forwardedge of the block a, adjoining the top, is formed a notch, c, of sufficient depth to receive the neck-yoke ring 0, and the lower and forward corner of the block a,below the notch c,ter1ninates in an upwardly-turned hook, (I. To the tongue A, in front of the holdback-iron B, the loop D is pivoted between the tongue A and the strap 6. The strap e is bent upward into the recess fin the tongue, the shoulder formed by the forward bend serving as a bearing for the upper cross-piece of the loop D. In the under surface of the tongue is formed arecess, f, of sufficient depth to receive the loop D.
The holdback-ring O is placed on the tongue by simply carrying it backward over the end of the tongue and past the loop D into the notch c. The ring in passing theloopD raises it into the recess f, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1', and when it finally reaches the notch c the loop D drops down into engagement with the hook (I, as shown in full lines in Fig. 1, thus securely holding the neck-yoke ring upon the end of the tongue and preventing it from being accidentally released.
When it is desired to remove the neck-yoke ring from the tongue, the loop D is pressed npward into the position shown in Fig. 1, when the ring may be readily withdrawn from the tongue.
Having thus fully described inyinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with the pole,A, recessed on its under side at f, the strap 0, secured to the pole and bent upward into the recess, and the loop D, secured between the strap and pole, with its upper or forward cross-piece pivoting or turning on the shoulder formed by the forward bend of the strap e, of the holdback-iron B, the brace b, secured to the pole,
the block a, recessed in its forward edge at c for the holdback-ring, and thehook d, engaged by the free inner end of the loop D, said loop being constructed toswing up into thetonguerecess f, substantially as set forth.
AUGUSTUS SMITH.
