TRUNK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.`358,'7/37, dated March 1,1887.
Application filed January 27, 1887. Serial No. 225,669. (No model.)

Beit known that I, J AMES H. FAREL, ofthe city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Trunks, of which the following :is a specication.
This'invention relates to traveling-trunks, and has for its object to produce a strong and durable trunk which is simple and convenient in construction.
The invention consists of the improvements which will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a perspective view of my improved trunk. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal 'section of the trunk. Fig. 3 is a vertical crosssection inline w x,'Fig. 2. Fig. 4-is a horizontal section in line y y, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a crosssection in line y y, Fig. 3, on an enlarged scale.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several ligures.
A represents the top, B the front, O C the ends or sides, D the back, and E the bottom, of my improved trunk. Each end piece C is rigidly secured along its four edges to the top, bottom, front, and rear walls of the trunk,and the contiguous edges of these parts are reenforced by corner-braces of usual construction, so that each end of thc trunk is perfectly rigid and provided with four rigid corners.
F represents the opening through which access is had to the interior of the trunk, and which is formed in the adjoining portions of the top A and front Wall,` B. The lateral edges f of the opening Fare arranged at suitable distances from the end walls, C, the opening occupying, preferably, about two-thirds of the length of the trunk. The upper or rear edge, f', of the opening F is arranged in the top,A, at a short distance from the rear wall, D, and the lower front edge, f2, of the opening F is arranged in the front wall, B, at a suitable height above the bottom of the trunk.
G represents an angular lid, which is hinged at its upper edge to the top A in rear of the top edge, f', of the opening F, and which extends downwardly beyond the lower edge, f2,
of the opening, where it is secured to the front wall, B, by a lock, g. The lid G is provided on its upperside with projecting fianges or ribs g, which bear against the outer sides of the top and front walls of the trunk and cover the joint, and it rests upon flanges or ribs g', which are secured to the inner side of the top and front walls, and which project into the opening F.
h h represent strengthening-bands extending around the body of thc truuk on both sides of the opening F.
I represents a central tray, and I ll side trays, which are supported in the ripper portion of the trunk on ledges or ribs z'. The central tray, I, is made of such size that it can be conveniently inserted through the opening F, being in depth and width nearly as large as said opening, The side trays, I', are of the same depth and fit under the overhanging portions j of the top A on both sides of the opening.
My improved trunk is very strong and durable, and can be handled and rolled on its edges or corners without aecting the lid, which latter is relieved from all shocks and strains incidentto the handling of the trunk.
I claim as my invention-- l. A trunk having its end pieces rigidly secured to the top, front, back, and bottoni pieces, and provided with au opening in one of its edges, which opening extends from said edge into the two contiguous walls of the truuk, and is closed by au angular lid, substantially as set forth.
