Primary ExaminerRamon S. Britts Attorney-Julian Caplan ABSTRACT: A clothes drier has mounting means for attachment to a pole or wall. A rod on the mounting means receives one end of each line, the opposite end being fixed to a bar which is connected to the outer end of an arm pivoted to the mounting means so as to move between down" and up" positions. Each line consists of two twisted strands and each line is spring connected to rod or bar. Clothes may be attached to the line by inserting a portion thereof between the strands, making use of clothespins unnecessary.
PATENTED JUN 8197] 3583571 21 1 FIG. 2' 22 adv INVENTOR. HAROLD D. BONNE Q ATTORNEY PINLESS CLOTHES DRIER This invention relates to a new and improved clothes drier and more particularly to a multiline collapsible drier which may be attached to a pole or wall.
One of the features of the invention is the fact that it may be conveniently mounted on an available wall, fence or pole. When pole-mounted, the height may be made adjustable.
A further feature of the invention is that the drier may be retracted to a vertical downward position when not in use. When thus retracted the device is inconspicuous. The drier may be loaded in retracted position and then swiveled up into extended position thereby making loading more convenient.
A further feature of the invention is that it may be readily moved between retracted and extended positions and held in extended position with facility.
A still further feature of the invention is the fact that the drier accommodates a plurality of lines.
One of the important features of the invention is the fact that each of the lines is under spring tension so that the lines are held taut in either extended or retracted positions.
Another very important feature of the invention is the fact that each line consists of a pair of twisted strands, which strands are both under spring tension. Thus the ends of the garment may be inserted between the strands and held in place without the use of clothespins. Accordingly an advantage of the drier is the fact that the garments are easily fastened and unfastened from the line and the need to apply and remove clothespins is eliminated.
Other objects of the present invention will become apparent upon reading the following specification and referring to the accompanying drawings in which similar characters of reference represent corresponding parts in each of the several views.
In the drawings:
FIG. 1 is a side elevation of the device showing one side of the drier in extended position and the other side in retracted position.
FIG. 2 is a top plan showing both sides in extended positions.
FIG. 3 is a fragmentary enlarged sectional view of the double line and portions of adjacent elements illustrating hanging of a garment by inserting the corners between the strands of the line.
FIG. 4 is a perspective view of the modification showing the device applied to a wall or fence.
ln the form of the invention shown in FIG. 1-2 the device is mounted on a pole 11, there being two duplicate hangers on opposite sides of the pole. The two sides are substantially identical in construction and hence it is necessary only to describe one side. A channel 12 is mounted with its base attached to pole 11 and the flanges thereof extending vertically outwardly. A horizontal rod 13 extends through the flanges of channel 12 adjacent to the bottom thereof, said rod 13 having extended lengths on either side of the device to accommodate the plurality oflines. An arm 14 having an inner end 16 bent at an angle of approximately 68 and extending between the flanges of channel 12 is pivotally attached by means of rod 13 passing through a hole (not shown) in the inner end ofend l6. Spaced upwardly from the point of attachment of end 16 is a hole 17. The flanges of channel 12 are formed with holes in alignment with hole 17 when the arm 14 is in the extended position as shown on the left-hand side of FIG. 1. A pin 18 having an enlarged eye 19 passes through the holes in the flanges and through hole 17 to maintain arm 14 in extended position. When the arm is to be collapsed, pin 18 is removed by grasping eye 19 allowing the arm to hang downwardly as shown on the right-hand side of FIG. 1.
The outer end of arm 14 is formed with flattened portion 15. A horizontal angle bar 20 and a flat bar 21 receive therebetween the ends of the lines 23 for the drier and are clamped together by bolts 22, one of which also connects portion 15 to bars 20-21. The lines 23 are twisted double strands. The outer ends thereof are caught between bars 20, 21 which secure the same in place. The inner ends of lines 23 pass through loop 26 of helical spring 24. On the end opposite loop 26 is a second loop 27 which passes over the rod 13.
In use, when the arm 14 is in retracted position as shown in FIG. 1, the end 16 pivots downward about rod 13 and the lines 23 extend vertically downward. To extend the lines, the arm 14 is pivoted until the end 16 is within the flanges of channel 12 and hole 17 lines up with the holes in the flanges so that pin 18 may be inserted. To facilitate handling, the pole 11 may be installed inside a larger pole 31 with a collar 32 around the pole 11 which is adjustable in elevation and held in position by clamp screw 25 which passes through such collar. Hence the pole 11 may be adjusted to the proper position or it may be moved between lowered and upward position in order to facilitate loading and also to facilitate moving the arm 14 between extended and retracted position.
It will be noted that the lines 23 consist of double twisted strands and are under spring tension by reason of the use of spring 24 in either extended or retracted positions. To hang a garment 28 the ends 29 thereof may be inserted between the strands 23. The tension on the strands holds the ends 29 in place. Accordingly it is not necessary to use clothespins to hold the garments on the line although clothespins may be used if desired.
FIG. 3 illustrates that one twisted pair of lines 23 may be used as a separate item apart from the hanger. The spring 24 is duplicated, as indicated by reference numeral 24b. Eyes 27 and 27b are hooked onto appropriately spaced hooks so that line 23 is taut.
In the form of the invention shown in FIG. 4, a single channel 12a is attached to wall or fence 36 by means of screws (not shown) through the web of the channel. ln other respects the modification of FIG. 4 resembles the preceding modification and the same reference numerals followed by the subscript a are used to designate corresponding parts.
