UNITE STATES PATENT FFICE.
LAMP TRIMMER AND EXTINGUISHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 358,199, dated February 22, 1887.
Application filed April 17, 1886.
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. I'IAVILAND, of Plainfield, in the county of Livingston and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Lamp Trimmer and Extinguisher, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to the construction of a combined lamp extinguisher and trimmer,
'ro as will be hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate I 5 corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 isan end view of the wick-chamber of a lamp provided with myimproved trimmer and extinguisher. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a plan view, a certain portion of the apparatus being broken away to disclose the construction of the parts.
In the drawings, A is-a wicktube or chamber, of any of the ordinary well-known constructions. I
B B are the wick-raisers, that are carried by theusual shaft, 0. Upon this shaft C,I arrange a sleeve, D, upon one end of which there is a thumb-wheel, E, and from which there projects alever-arm, F, which extends to a point about 0 opposite the center of the wick chamber or tube A. p
The trimmer proper is mounted on the wickchamber, and consists of an upwardly-extending jaw, G, that is formed with clamps that 5 partially encircle the wick-chamber, as clearly indicated in the drawings. Two lugs or ears, 0 0, project outward from the clamps g g, and serve as bearings for .a short shaft, II, upon which a second jaw, I, is mounted, the said jaw I being provided with extending arms dd, that are apertured to engage with the shaft H. Connection between the lever-arm F and the jaw I is established by means of a connectingrod, K, which extends from the end of the lever F to an extending arm or plate, L, formed Serial No. 199,193. (No model.)
upon the jaw I. The sleeve D is held in its position upon the shaft 0 by means of a collar, e.
If it is desired to trim a lamp provided with such an apparatus as I have described, the wheel E is moved so as to turn the lever F upward in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 1, which movement of the lever will carry the trimmer proper to the position indicated in dotted lines in said figure, and if the wick has first been turned up to about the position indicated, the charred remains upon the top of the wick will be removed by the jaws G and I.
If it is desired to extinguish the lamp, the jaws may be raised,in the manner described,to the position indicated, and being so raised will act as an effectual extinguisher, and at the same time will remove the charred remains and prepare the wickfor further use.
Having thus fully described my invention, whatI claim as new, and dcsi re to secure by Letters Patent, is Y 1. A lamp trimming and extinguishing attachment comprising the clips 9, provided with the vertically-projectingjaw G, having av cutting-edge, the jaw I, formed with a cuttingedge, and with the horizontal inward-extending lugs d d, pivoted to the clips 9 below and in rear of the jaw'G, the cutting-edge of 75 the said jaw G being in the path of the cutting-edge of the jaw I, and means for operating thejaw I, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a wick-chamber and its wick-raising shaft, of a sleeve, D, provided with a thumb-wheel, E, and having alever,F,ajaw,G,heldtothewick-ehamberby clips 9 g and having lugs c c, a second jaw formed with lugs d d, a shaft, H, passing through the lugs o c and (Z d, a plate or arm, L, and a con- 85 necting-rod, K, substantially as described.
WVILLIAM \V. HAVILAND.
