VILLIAM P. BUTLER, OF CHICAGO, ILLlNOIS.
LAM P-SHADE HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 389.439, dated September 11, 1888.
(No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM P. BUTLER, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, and a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamp-Shade Holders, of which the following is a full description.
One of the principal causes of breakage in globes comes from improperly adjusting the setscrews with which the globe-holder is provided for retaining the globe in position when the same is returned thereto after it has been removed for cleaning or other purposes.
The object of my invention is to provide an appliance which shall obviate the necessity for removing the globe from the globeholder, thereby materially lessening the danger ofinjuring or breaking the globe. I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of a drop-light with the globe broken away to show the globe arm or rod; Fig. 2, a top view of the same through theline 1 lof Fig. 1; and Fig. 3,a side view with the globe removed, showing the globe-arm.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar letters indicate like parts throughout the several views, A A A is the supply-pipe. and also constitutes the frame-work of the droplight, to the lower end of which are attached the burners B B B.
G is a globe or shade, and D a smoke-bell. The globe O is held in position by the setscrews E E E E, with which the globe-holder F is provided.
The gassupply pipe, as shown, consists ofa perpendicular upper portion, A, and a curved lower portion, A, connected by a lateral joint, A".
Extending downward from the lateral joint of the supply-pipe A, as shown in the drawings, is the globe arm or rod G, to which is fastened the collar H by means of the set-screw K. The collar H is provided with radial arms L L L, serving to connect the collar H with the globe-holder F. When the removal or adj ust ment of the globe is desircd,the set-screw Kis loosened, when the collar H, to which is fastened the globe, as shown above,can be slipped along the rod or arm G,or detached therefrom at pleasure. It will be seen that by means of this construction the globe is detachably suspended from the rod G, concentric therewith and abm'e the burner or burners.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the depending gas-supply pipe formed with the perpendicular upper portion, A, the lateral joint A and the curved portion A,carrying the burner,the arm or rod G, depending from the lateral joint in line with the perpendicular portion of the gas-pipe, the collar H, formed with the radial arms L and supported from said rod, and a set-screw, K,whereby a globe may be detachably suspended from the rod concentrically therewith over thcburner, substantially as set forth.
\VILLI'AM P. BUTLER.
