IMPLEMENT FOR GAP LING CARTRIDGE SHELLS. No. 363,175 Patented May 17, 1887.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES A. SCOTT, OF MONMOUTH, ILLINOIS.
IMPLEMENT FOR CAPPING CARTRIDGE-SHELLS.
SPECIFICATION forming par; of Letters Patent No. 363,175, dated May 17, 1887.
Application filed February 23, 1986. Renewed Apr-ll 20, 1887. Serial No. 235,459. [No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES A. Soorr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monmouth, in the county of Warren and Stateof Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Implements for Capping Cartridge-Shells, which improvements are fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in which a movable handle or arm operates a toggle-jointin conjunction with a capping pin, a radial arm, and a stationary collar or socket for holding cartridge-shells; and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide for increasing the amount of power used, transmitting the same to the capping-pin; second, to reduce the friction of the capping-pin. I attain these objects by means of the mechanism illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which the figure is a view partly in vertical section and partly in elevation.
The handle A, the upright post L, the post E, with its ribbrace I, the shoulders F F, and collar Q, constitute the stationary part of the implement. At the upper end of the post E, on the fulcrum-pivot M, works one end of the lever T, which, in connection with the lever O at the common pivot S, forms a toggle-joint. At the lower end of the lever (l, by means of the common pivot N, is connected the cappingpin H. The lower end of the capping-pin H passes through the arm A at the hole X. The handle B is but an elongated projection from the side of the lever T, and is bentto conform to the hand of the operator.
It is plain that when the handles A and B are grasped in the hand of the operator and the handle B is forced downward toward the handle A the arms of the toggle-joint T O are brought into a straight line, thereby forcing the capping-pin H downwardnipon a cap of a cartridge-shell when resting with its breechrim on the collar Q and the shoulders F F.
One end of the radial arm D is attached to 5 the object of this being to remove all side.
pressure from the cappingpin H and convey such pressure to the post L, thereby removing all friction that might be occasioned by the capping-pin H pressing against the sides of the hole X when the implement is in operation.
I am aware that prior to my invention implements for capping cartridge shells have been made with two handles connected by a joint with a capping-pin, and with collar and shoulders in which to placev the cartridge-shell. I therefore do not claim such a combination; but
\Vhat I do claim for my invention, and de sire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, in an implement for capping cartridges, with a handle, A, having downwardlyextending shoulders 1 a collar, Q, supported by said shoulders, and a post, E, projecting upwardly from the handle, of a lever, B, having a downwardly-extending lug, T, pivoted to said post, a cappingpin, II, extending through an opening in the handle, and the lever pivoted to the capping-pin and to the lever T, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the handle and means, substantially as described, for supporting a cartridge, of the toggle-joint and its operating-handle, said operating-handle being pivoted to a post, E, extending upwardly from the handle A, a cappingpin pivoted to the lever O of the toggle-joint and extending through an opening in the handle A, and the arm D, pivoted to the capping-pin and to arm L, projecting from the handle, as set forth.
