SHOW CASE FOR UMBRELLAS EZPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 356,858, dated February 1. 1887.
Application filed December 4, 1585. Serial X0. 184,738. (No model.)
To a]? who-m may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. Towson, a citizen of the United States. residing at Wash ington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Showfiascs; and I do declare the following to beafull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to improvements in showcases designed especially for uinbrclins and the like, and has for its object to form a ready means oi'display and convenient means of inspection; also, to provide a means Whereby various sizes are separated, the said articles may lie flat, and the entire device he ornamental and attractive. A practical adaptation of the invention is shown in the annexed drawings, in Whit-11 Figure 1 represents aperspcctive view of the device, and Fig. 2 a vertical section taken from front to rear.
The case A has a top extension, B, the front of which latter may be provided with a panel, C, or any other suitable means for advertisement or ornamentation.
The main portion or case A has the greater portion of the front curved or are shape, and is provided with a sliding glass or transparent panel, D, which is curved longitndinallythat is, from the bottom to the topto correspond to the form of the front of the case. In the sides of said case A are grooves E, forming Ways for the said panel to move in. These grooves E reach to the upper rear end of the top B, and are on a curve that causes them to not exceed a quarter of a circle, although not necessarily confined to the said limits.
Xiithin the case A is a series of trays, F, which are preferably formed of corrugated metal, the said corrugations G extending from front to rear. While the preferable mode is to make the said trays F from corrugated sheet metal, they may be made of other material and have fiat bottoms, but must be pro vided with grooves on top extending from front to rear. These trays hold the umbrellas and are preferably fixed within the case, While the direction of the grooves facilitates the re moval of the said umbrellas. To remove the said umbrellas the panel D is lifted and passes into the top B.
As umbrellas and the like are made of certain graded lengths of stick, and as the said length of stick in the several grades varies but little, each grade being about two inches longer or shorter than the next, the purpose of forming the panel D on the curve above mentioned and the necessity of the top 13 which receives the upper end of said panel D become up parent.
When the case is closed, the heads only of the umbrellasticks are visible.
The case has contained in it, below the panel D and independent thereof, a flat tray, H, which may be extended, and is for the purpose of receiving the umbrellas when removed from the trays.
Below the tray H the case may contain drawers I, which may be used for various purposes.
To any convenient or suitable portion of the exterior of the case A is hinged a block, K,
preferably of semi'elliptical shape, and provided with a series of sockets or receptacles, L, for the ferrule ends of parasol-sticks. When not in use, this block may be turned upward against the case and thus be out of the Way. As many of these blocks K as desired may he used.
I am aware that show-cases for spools or like small articles have been provided with grooved trays, the grooves extending from side to side, that were removable, and aiso the case having a transparent panel traveling in side grooves; but my invention is distinguished from such constructions in that all the grooves extend from front to rear, the trays are fixed and are formed of corrugated or grooved sheet-metal, the case is provided with an extensible flat tray, the case is also provided with a top extension for receiving the panel, and the case is also provided with a arasol-rack, as described. If the grooves extended from side to side, the object of the invention-i. 8., to display the handles of the umbrellas while protecting the body thereofvvonld be defeated.
I claim 1. A show-case for umbrellas and the like, having a series of fixed trays with grooves or TOO corrugations extending from the front to the rear, and a curved transparent panel moving in. grooves in the said. case, substantially as specified.
2. A show case consisting of a main portion containing fixed trays and a top extension thereon, and having grooves in the sides extending to the upper rear portion of said top, and a transparent panel resting in said grooves and covering the front of said main portion of the case, substantially as specified.
3. A show-case for umbrellas and the like, having interior fixed trays with grooves or corrugations extending from front to rear, a sliding transparent panel covering the same,
and an independent extensible flat tray nor-
